Deeply saddened to inform the group that Abhijit Mehta passed away today morning after being quite unwell over the past 20 days and a long standing illness.

I will remember him as a very dear friend over the past decade whose intelligence and intellectual honesty was unequalled in my opinion. Unfortunately he was a tormented soul on many personal accounts which never let his considerable talents be utilised for larger good. I am yet to come across anybody who has read all the Mumbai Metro DPRs in complete totality like him besides so much more in his understanding of transport policy.

Late Meera Sanyal had introduced me to Abhijit in December 2009 at the annual Sanctuary Awards for which she had invited me. Both of us had contested Lok Sabha 2009 and Abhijit was her campaign manager who had very ably handled the back office. We both stayed in Lokhandwala Complex then and he had driven back that night and dropped me home and in the journey we also became very good friends.

Over the past few years as he became inactive, this group was where he engaged in a few conversations, which will also remain as some form of record. Many may have a less amiable reflection about him. But I hope everybody will have him in their thoughts for a moment.

Due to the virus scare I was not able to meet him in his last moments or attend his funeral today evening at Shivaji Park.

Dear Rishi,
I'm very sorry to hear about the passing of Abhijit Mehta
I did not know him personally but we did have long exchanges on Email with him, and although I did not agree with him on most issues, I could guess that he had a sharp mind and the capacity to put across his views effectively.
Do convey my heartfelt condolences to his family.
Regards,

Very sad to hear abt Abhijit. Met him many times in various round table discussions, seminars and had a very knowledgeable discussion on various topics. Its always great pleasure to interact with this techno-savy friend. Will miss him always. Heartfelt Condolences to his family & friends. Om Shanti.

Extremely sorry to hear this news Rishi. I wish we could have continued to stay more in touch in the last few years.

I will always remember Abhijit as the guy who introduced me to Uber. I have thought of him often in the last few years as well, missing our heated conversations about transport and politics. It was truly invigorating and motivating talking to him. I honestly hope and pray he finds peace as he rests. My thoughts will stay with him.
