We have been hearing of Transportation and Housing as major issues of Mumbai and to that matter nearly 50 Indian Cities with population of 10 Lakh plus. In the Metro Cities of Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkatta, Chennai, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad and Pune, road congestion are causing a domino effect. People are resorting to personal vehicle either because the Public Transport are inadequate or almost non existent. And those who can afford personal vehicles is a small fraction of the city dwellers. This addition to the personal mode of transport, be it motorized two wheelers or cars, further accentuating the problem of urban transport. This leads to further deterioration of Livability Status of our Metro Cities. Other cities are worse in many ways.

Urbanisation of Latin Americas took place much rapidly and disparity in living conditions were stark. Bogota, the capital city of Columbia was one such city. Its political head, the directly elected mayor, Enrique Penalosa, in 1998 embarked upon making his city sustainable, equitable and livable. He touched upon various aspects that govern these parameters and charted out a course that subsequent mayors of Bogota found it worth following.

In Bogota, a mayor is not allowed to stand for a second term and the mayoral term is of just three years.

Enrique Penalosa has visited India a few times and Mumbai couple of times at least. He comes to Mumbai again, bringing with him this time further rich experience of the past five years world over of success stories of Bus Rapid Transit System and other measures of making a city sustainable, equitable and livable. He comes here after a visit to Ahmedabad where its first BRTS rout has commenced its operation recently.
