Hi,

CUPS in Ubuntu (10.04 to 12.04) is quite a nuisance as it keeps dying
and currently I am working around it by adding a line to restart the
cups service in rc.local as well as a cron job to do the same every half
an hour. This is not right but atleast gets things printed. These are
basic things that should work out of the box.

My sister's desktop is has Kubuntu 12.04.1. This system has a printer
(shared on the LAN); no issues with CUPS printing (local+remote).

Any helpful entries in log files in the /var/log/cups directory?

Try re-installing the package.

Probable cause: The usb must be powering down, which will cause constantly connected stuff to bomb.

Still, cups should not bomb, the printer may disappear/disabled.

This is happening across different machines, one at my place and 2 at
different clients' places, all sharing the printer on LAN. Haven't
checked the logs.

This is unique to Ubuntu. I will look it up if there is some power setting for this.
