Canonical announced new version of Ubuntu specially designed for SmartPhones, and the first devices will be shipping in early of 2014.

Below some of the (expected) features of Ubuntu Phone OS :

1. Edge magic: thumb gestures from all four edges of the screen enable users to find content and switch between apps faster than other phones.

2. Deep content immersion—controls appear only when the user wants them.

3. A beautiful global search for apps, content, and products.

4. Voice and text commands in any application for faster access to rich capabilities.

5. Both native and Web or HTML5 apps.

6. Evolving personalized art on the welcome screen

Hello,

I have been waiting for this for a very long time.

Sadly, it seems that the Linux terminal will be disabled by default as "ordinary users will not need it". It makes sense but still would have been great to just apt-get stuff or use the same online guides for configuring software, as done traditionally on the Desktop.

But what they are doing is great, trying to bring a little bit more openness to Mobile platforms. As far as I can tell, they are not planning on voiding the warranty of a device if you use sudo. So, you are free to tinker around.

See Jono Bacon's and Mark Shuttleworth's interviews at CES 2013 on YouTube for more details.

Best Regards,

I haven't been keeping myself updated for a while - how does Ubuntu plan to have apps for their platform? Will it be source/binary compatible with Android?

Ah, how I miss the N900. It could do all this, and a lot more.
