First of all, I am very thankful for every developer who contributed to thank y developing and maintaining MuMax3. It has become one of the most widely used micromagnetic simulation tools in the community.

I noticed that MuMax3 currently depends on CUDA and NVIDIA GPUs. According to the documentation and build instructions, there does not appear to be support for Apple Silicon GPUs through Apple's Metal framework. Since there might be many students/researchers nowadays who use apple device which are only based on Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3 and M4) that has different architecture:

  • Are there any current plans to support Apple Silicon GPUs via Metal?
  • Has the team considered introducing a backend abstraction layer that could support both CUDA and Metal compute kernels?
  • Are there any technical or maintenance challenges that make a Metal implementation impractical at the moment?

I am willing and planning to do some Apple Sillicon GPU metal supported MuMax version development if this would be allowed by the contributors in this community.

Thank you for your time and for all your work on MuMax3.
