Hello,

Be there or be a tesseract! I think it's cooler than a square, but still, not as cool as today's meeting at 7:30pm which you can join by following this link: http://tinyurl.com/math20event

I hope to discuss Peter McLoughlin's GeoGebra model, Karen Fuson's concise diagrams for models that Dor Abrahamson asked her to share, and the new version of Colleen King's Thinking Blocks.

See you there with your models, too :-)

Also, Scratch Day is this Saturday and I hope to invite my Scratch geeklets to make some models for us!

Cheers,
Maria Droujkova

You have no idea how much I want to attend this session. I've been following Karen Fuson's work for a long time and would have really enjoyed that segment. However, I have a class that goes until 8:00 tonight.

I know your focus is multiplication but I want to mention a very undeveloped idea I've been mulling over for using Thinking Blocks in a more engaging, possibly game-like, way for students. I'm envisioning a situation in which two beings are unable to communicate directly. I like science fiction so my communication scenario is mission control -> space traveler -> friendly alien partner. Mission control gives a series of real problems to be solved (in the context of the plot) but the space hero must translate the problems into visual models that the verbally challenged alien can understand and, eventually, solve. Students could play both roles. Does this narrative have any potential? Maria, you had mentioned having some ideas and I'm eager to learn more.

Also, I fixed a bug in the general purpose modeling tool, the interactive guided tutorials will be completely different in a couple of weeks, and there will be a new unit covering fractions.

Have a great event. If there's any way I can pop in toward the end, I will try.

Colleen

Colleen, maybe we can move the meeting to 8-9pm next week so you can make it?

We did not get to Thinking Blocks today. Tony and Steve have cool presentations coming up, so we talked about those and some of my Moebius Noodles (adventurous math for young kids) stuff.

Attached please find Karen Fuson's diagrams - she said they can be used by anyone, so I am sharing here.

We talked a bit about recursion, as a powerful idea, and ways to introduce young kids to it, and models based on it.

Here is a picture Tony shared about recursion:

And here is a freaky multiplicative video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TR_8SDNQ0ks

Tony and Steve, I hope you share your presentation materials with the group!

Thanks, Maria, that would be a better time but please do whatever works best for you and Steve.
Looking forward to the recording.
