Hi Randall,
You can find answers to many of your questions at the following link:
http://www.multiplaz.com/aboutMultiplaz runs off of an AC power source. You do not need compressed air, or gases such as argon or acetylene
for the Multiplaz. The Inverter is used with the welding and cutting torches which come with the unit. There is no
wire feed available for the unit.
The Multiplaz will "weld, solder, braze, harden, and cleanse metals including steel, aluminum, copper, cast iron, bronze and other metals."
The inverter is not designed to do many different types of welding operation such as wire feed, tig, mig etc.. It is able to do it's
own unique plasma welding method which can do the same welding "jobs" as as these other welding methods. There are 2 modes
for welding with the Multiplaz. One mode uses primarily a plasma torch (flame) and can do any heating or welding type jobs that an oxy/acetylene
torch could do. The other mode includes an electric arc along with the plasma torch to do jobs that typically would be done with tig, mig, or stick
welding.
The Multiplaz can do many of the same jobs as other types of welders but I would not pretend that it can do everything as well
as specialty equipment. For example I have seen it compared with purpose built plasma cutting machines. Because the Multiplaz
does not use compressed air for cutting it can not cut material that is as thick and it can not necessarily make as clean a cut. But it
does a good enough job for my purposes, and it does not require purchasing and hauling around an air compressor.
The torches for the Multiplaz are bulkier than the welding rod of a stick welder, so getting into tight places is a bit more of a challenge.
So I can see the need for a stick welder sometimes. Tig and mig torches might also be able to get into tighter places.
There are some tricks to learn to handle welding very thin metal (like 20 guage / 1mm thick material). I have found
that it handles welding 1/2 inch (
12.7 mm) and thicker steel with no problem.
I like my Multiplaz because I don't have to rent or purchase tanks for argon, acetylene, air, propane or such. I also
don't have to have multiple machines taking space in my shop such as mig for some things, tig for some, and a
plasma cutter besides. I still have yet to purchase an air compressor, it is something I want but I don't even
know where I would fit one in my small shop. The Multiplaz fits in a shoulder bag that I can carry around and it is
not hard to find somewhere to put it in my small shop.
I hope this helps answer your questions.
Take Care,
Rob
