Scrivener Specifics

So I'd like to try Scrivener for my thesis in Computer Science, having
been a LaTeX user for a long time. Fortunately I don't really hack
LaTeX much, except for defining an occasional command, so it might
work.

Now my questions mostly fall on the Scrivener side for now. First of
all, why can't you "Export" in MMD, only "Compile Draft"?

Then, I need to know excatly which options of "Compile Draft" are
applicable. We have options to "Keep format" in the first "Content"
pane of the three -- do we need them?

How exactly do Titles work there --

-- what are File Groups? Whenever I select more than one scrivening
and them choose gear=>Group, a folder is created with those
scrivenings; so what are "groups" if not scrivenings in a folder, and
then how is a folder different?

-- what Text Options and Formatting checkboxes are applicable?

References: I'd like to manage them in a separate scrivening.
However, any MD style one, [id] url "label" stays the same. How do we
use BiBTeX with Scrivener/MMD?

Paragraphs -- do I really have to insert an empty line whenever I need
to prevent Scrivener/MMD glueing lines together? Looks like it
understands lists, which I can leave without empty lines
intermingling; any other options to save me from layering them in?

Now, say I'm writing a latex "article", not a thesis. I want each
scrivenings folder to map onto a \section{}, and each scrivening onto
a \subsection{}. Or, I'm writing a short thesis and don't need
"parts," rather only chapters, sections, and subsections. How do I
configure MMD for the right MMD title level at each Scrivener grouping
level?

Well, actually, you CAN "export" MMD as "Plain Text (txt)" files,
it just doesn't make much sense. The "export" function is for
exporting individual documents only.

IIRC, only "Include" and "Document Elements" are relevant for MMD
output, the rest of the options is reserved for other output
formats (e.g. RTF, DOC, ...). "Document Elements" should normally
look like this:

Titles: X X X
Meta-data: - - -
Synopses: - - -
Notes: - - -
Text: X X X


or in some cases like that:

Titles: X X -
...

A File Group is basically any file or folder in Scrivener
that has sub documents. In other words, the "Titles" and
"Text" boxes for "File Groups" must always be checked, or
you will break the hierarchical structure of your document.

Scrivener also differentiates between Files and Folders,
which can be helpful, for instance, if you want use Folders
to suppress the title of a document (uncheck the "Titles" box
in "Document Elements" for that purpose). That way, you can
keep the references to footnotes, images and websites in a
separate file in Scrivener.

Yes, that's how MMD works.

You can easily change the top level section by setting "Base Header
Level"
to "2" or "3" in Scrivener's " MMD Settings" dialog.
