re this SF Chronicle article http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/09/09/BAIFS1GE4.DTL

The article is titled "Racism in Schools Here's Proof", but if you
follow the thread you'll see interesting comments leading to the
support of another conclusion, namely, the statistical analysis done
to support the OP's claim is wrong - parent's (not just white parents)
choosing to skip mostly black school's are just using common sense!

Year's ago, prior to having a teenager, I would have jumped all over
this research eluded to in the article as an example of racism in
schools, but now that I have a teenager and have been listening and
reading this urban community. Whoa Nellie - another picture emerges.

It turns out the Chronicle, denounced regularly for being too liberal,
and applauded regularly for being too real, in this case has given
parents willing to be educated a pretty dismal but accurate picture of
SF schools. The chronicle has repeatedly and accurately informed us
that the mostly black schools: have a police presence almost 24/7,
have less resources and some don't even have books, have teachers who
are burned out and unable to "leave no child behind" due to low morale
and a state of siege, have a violent path to get to their desk, have
gang members who are in the face of non-blacks every day, and desiring
to initiate other blacks into their turf, and the list goes on. I know
these students, I live and ride the Muni with them, and of course not
every black child in a black school is underachieving and prone to
displays of dominance and violence. However, what does a parent who
has school choice see, exactly, the same thing the Chronicle potrays,
accurately, year after year after year!

Again, is a parent being racist by choosing a school that is 'less
black'? No, I think they're using common sense. These type of studies
only serve to deflect where the real racism is and delfects the real
seat of change. It is way past time to stop blaming the parents who
select the safest most resourced places for their children.

What do you think? The article by CW Nevius is a good and challenging
read.
