ThePenguins of Madagascar is an American computer-animated series co-produced by DreamWorks and Nickelodeon, and executive-produced by Bob Schooley and Mark McCorkle. It was the first of three co-productions between DreamWorks and Nickelodeon (the later two being Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness and Monsters vs. Aliens).

The series stars the Penguins from DreamWorks' Madagascar film franchise. The pilot episode, "Gone in a Flash", aired as part of Superstuffed Nicktoons Weekend on November 28, 2008, alongside seven new episodes of SpongeBob SquarePants.[2][3] The series officially began regularly airing on March 28, 2009 (following the premiere of that year's Kids' Choice Awards). Nickelodeon ordered 26 episodes for season 1, and ordered a second season of 26 episodes in January 2009, bringing the total to 52. The series premiere drew 6.1 million viewers, making it the network's most-watched series premiere to date.[4]

The Penguins of Madagascar was officially stated to have ended production in December 2014.[5] Afterward, DreamWorks Animation produced two more Madagascar television shows, both of them prequels to the original films - All Hail King Julien (which had Schooley and McCorkle serving as executive consultants) and Madagascar: A Little Wild.

The series follows the adventures of four penguin protagonists - Skipper, Kowalski, Rico, and Private - in New York City's Central Park Zoo. The Penguins rule the roost at their Central Park habitat, carrying out secret missions in the heart of the city. At times, their missions beckon them to venture outside the zoo. Just as the team thinks it has its urban acreage under control, a new neighbor moves in next door: Julien, King of the Lemurs. Now the penguins must keep control of the Central Park Zoo despite the lemur's antics.

The series' canonicity and timeline placement in relation to the Madagascar movies is unclear. The show's intro sequence shows the Penguins opening a crate shipped from Madagascar, which is revealed to contain Julien, Maurice, and Mort, suggesting this is how the lemurs ended up at the Central Park Zoo. However, the movies' protagonists - Alex the lion, Marty the zebra, Gloria the hippopotamus, and Melman the giraffe - are nowhere to be seen and are rarely, if ever, mentioned (with the notable exception of Alex appearing as Skipper's hallucination, as detailed below).

Mark McCorkle said that they had considered linking the series with the movies early on, but production started before the ending to Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa (in which the Penguins leave for Monte Carlo while the lemurs stay in Africa with the films' protagonists) was finalized. Tom McGrath (the franchise's co-creator and the voice of Skipper) implied once that the series does not actually take place in the same continuity as the Madagascar movies themselves, saying that he "simply wanted them all back at the zoo" and that he "think[s] of it as taking place in a parallel universe".[6] However, there is no other known official word from DreamWorks Animation on the matter.

It should be noted that a theatrical movie starring the Penguins and sharing the show's title was released in November 2014. The theatrical movie is officially shown to be in-continuity with the movies, taking place directly after the events of Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted, but none of the characters created for the TV show appear in it (though Julien and Mort have a speaking cameo in the mid-credits scene, possibly due to their prominence in the show). The movie was distributed by 20th Century Fox (the distributor of DreamWorks Animation's films at the time) and had no involvement from Nickelodeon whatsoever, so it is not covered on this wiki.

In late 2006,[7] Nickelodeon and DreamWorks Animation announced that they would collaborate to create a Nicktoon based on the Madagascar films. The new series would star the Penguins from the film series.

The series was co-produced between the Nickelodeon Animation Studio's Burbank, CA location and DreamWorks. Animation was carried out in India, New Zealand and Taiwan. Both Nickelodeon and DreamWorks Animation were planning on a 26-episode season for Season 1, but then the episode number ended up at 46.

The series' first DVD release, simply titled The Penguins of Madagascar and containing the two segments that made up the first episode, was released exclusively in a two-pack with some copies of the Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa DVD. Nine more DVDs of the show were released from 2010 to 2014. Most recently, five select episodes were included on Universal Studios Home Entertainment's Madagascar: The Ultimate Collection DVD and Blu-ray sets in 2019.

The series received mixed to positive reviews from critics and fans of the movies. While it has been praised for creativity, it was criticized by several fans of the franchise for not capturing the feel of the movies, having cheap animation, boring stories and for rewriting and flanderizing the characters' personalities (especially Julien). However, many fans of the franchise have praised it for being faithful to the source material, a funny premise, an all star cast, and even some great action scenes.

Does anybody remember the 2014 Dreamworks movie Penguins of Madagascar? You know, it's a movie when Skipper, Kowalski, Rico and Private -- the most elite spies ever hatched -- join forces with a chic undercover organization known as the North Wind. Led by highly trained, handsome and arrogant Agent Classified, this special inter-species task force must stop a many-tentacled villain, Dr. Octavius Brine, from destroying the world. I liked that movie a lot when I was a kid and it's a really good movie.

Anyway, I was at home eating ham and cheese sandwich for lunch, until my phone buzzed. I pulled out my phone and looked at my email and I noticed that I got an email from Dreamworks themselves. Here's what they said:

"Hello, Bryden. Since you're a fan of Dreamworks and that you like our stuff, we decided that we wanted to show you a deleted draft of a scene from Penguins of Madagascar. Please download this file of the deleted draft of Penguins of Madagascar. After viewing this deleted draft of the opening scene from Penguins of Madagascar, please don't screen it anywhere. Dreamworks Animation."

Anyway, they sent my a file that came along with the message. I downloaded the file from my phone to my laptop. I then turned on my laptop and went to my files and saw that the file's name was "penguinsofmadagascaropeningscenebeta.mov". I then opened up the file and the video began. Before the video began, yet again, there was a warning. The warning said this:

"This deleted, later changed opening scene of Penguins of Madagascar is not for people who are overly sensitive. If you are scared while viewing it, please do not watch this video. Viewer discretion is advised."

The Penguins of Madagascar is a spin-off of the "Madagascar" films, even though it occasionally makes a few references to them. The series follows the adventures of four penguins: Skipper, Kowalski, Private, and Rico, who perform various paramilitary missions to protect their home in the Central Park Zoo. The Penguins often have to deal with problems caused or made worse by the lemurs King Julien XIII, Maurice, and Mort.

The series was released 21 days after the second movie. DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg has stated that "there is at least one more chapter. We ultimately want to see the characters make it back to New York."

"The Penguins of Madagascar" is an animated show currently airing on the Nickelodeon network. The series is based on the military-esque adventures of 4 penguins living in the Central Park Zoo in New York. The Penguins had their first appearance in the movies "Madagascar" in 2005 where they were part of a subplot to try to make it back to their homeland of Antarctica by hijacking a ship. They find Antarctica too cold and eventually end up on the warm island of Madagascar. "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa" was the 2008 sequel to "Madagascar" and once again featured the penguins antics as they tried to reconstruct an old airplane in order to leave Africa.

The penguins had their first separate adventure in an animated short called "The Madagascar Penguins in a Christmas Caper" which aired in theaters on October 7, 2005 with the stop-motion film, "Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit". This short was included on later editions of of the "Madagascar" and "Shrek" DVDs which were both released on November 15, 2005. This was also the unofficial pilot episode of the TV show.

It was decided in 2006 that there should be a Nicktoon based on the "Madagascar" movie. No details about anything having to do with the show or its characters were confirmed until November 2007, when Nickelodeon advertised a sneak peak of three new shows that were coming to Nickelodeon for the 2008 year.

On November 28, 2008, the first two episodes, "Popcorn Panic" and "Gone in a Flash" aired as part of a "Super Stuffed Nicktoons Weekend" along with two other contenders for new shows, "The Mighty B!" and "Making Fiends". They aired right before 7 brand new episodes of the sixth season of "SpongeBob Squarepants".

The actual series premier happened on March 28, 2009 with the episodes "Launchtime" and "Haunted Habitat". The premier occurred right after the Nickelodeon 2009 Kids' Choice Awards and drew 6.1 million viewers making it Nickelodeon's most watched series premier of all time.

Each half hour show consists of two 11 minute episodes and are not permanently paired, meaning the two episodes shown together in the half-hour time slot might not be the same pair as a future airing of the show. The show is co-produced by DreamWorks Animation and Nickelodeon Animation Studios (both in California), and the animation is done by DK Ent. and Paprikaas studios in India. For voice casting, the series used many original voice actors from the "Madagascar" movies. However, a few of the original movie voice talents were not able to do work for the show due to other involvements so other actors had to be found. The final cast ended up being perfect and unless noted, one cannot tell the difference between the film and show voices!
