Hi everyone, this is Jesse who co/ founded the garden and also gardens out in Mulberry with you… I’ve had a few conversations with new gardeners and thought I would share some info and Tips to further your success
1. Water tomatoes early if possible. Water around the base of the plants not the leaves. Wet leaves will burn in the heat and also overnight can begin to develop fungus.
If you see, leaves yellowing with spots, cut those off, immediately put them in a bag and take them out of the garden… Do not put them in the compost
2. Insects are arriving. I have seen Japanese beetles and Bean beetles.
Please check your squash, cucumber and bean plants. If you see any beetles remove them either by squashing them, or putting them in a bag to take out of the garden look at the back of the plants and you might see green or yellow eggs, which are tiny clusters, or the front of the plants that have metallic looking clusters of eggs Destroy these… If the eggs have hatched, you will see yellow larva usually on the back of plants destroy these .
In the community garden, we share bugs. I am very vigilant in my garden, and I would appreciate you to do the same for all of us. If your bean leaves start looking ragged and eaten you have these insects
cut off all those leaves and look carefully.
If your plants are heavily infested, pull them up, put them in a bag, take them away from the garden to discard
3. It is going to be very very hot this week and likely on and off the rest of the summer. If you water in the middle of the day, the water will dissipate quickly and not soak in.
If possible, water, early or later in the day
4. Consider mulching I use grass clippings wheat straw, shredded newspaper. The advantages are keeping the weeds down, cooling the soil, keeping the moisture in and as the mulch decomposes building the organic matter. Wood chips are not good because they pull nitrogen out of the soil
pine bark is acidic.
I hope this is helpful if your way, please contact someone to take care of your garden and harvest your food… There is a lot of food to harvest out there right now
Happy gardening, Jesse
