Posted: 28 Apr 2007 06:43 PM CDT TRUST is a very important factor for all relationships. When trust is broken, it is the end of the relationship. Lack of trust leads to suspicion, suspicion generates anger, anger causes enmity and enmity may result in separation. A telephone operator told me that one day she received a phone call. She answered, “Public Utilities Board.” There was silence. She repeated, “PUB.” There was still no answer. When she was going to cut off the line, she Heard a lady’s voice, “Oh, so this is PUB. Sorry, I got the number from my Husband’s pocket but I do not know whose number it is.” Without mutual trust, just imagine what will happen to the couple if the telephone operator answered with just “hello” instead of “PUB”. —————— ————- ————- ————- ————- ————- – NO POINTING FINGERS
A man asked his father-in-law, “Many people praised you for a
successful marriage. Could you please share with me your
secret?” We all look forward to being loved and respected. Many people are afraid of losing face. Generally, when a person makes a mistake, he would look around to find a scapegoat to point the finger at. This is the start of a war. We should always remember that when we point one finger at a person, the other four fingers are pointing at ourselves. If we forgive the others, others will ignore our mistake too. —————— ————- ————- ————- ————- ————- – CREATING PERFECT RELATIONSHIPS? A person visited the government matchmaker for marriage, SDU, and requested “I am looking for a spouse. Please help me to find a suitable one.” The SDU officer said, “Your requirements, please.” “Oh, good looking, polite, humorous , sporty, knowledgeable, good in singing and dancing. Willing to accompany me the whole day at home during my leisure hour, if I don’t go out. Telling me interesting stories when I need companion for conversation and be silent when I want to rest.” The officer listened carefully and replied, “I understand you need television.” There is a saying that a perfect match can only be found between a blind wife and a deaf husband, because the blind wife cannot see the faults of the husband and the deaf husband cannot hear the nagging of the wife. Many couples are blind and deaf at the courting stage and dream of perpetual perfect relationship. Unfortunately, when the excitement of love wears off, they wake up a nd discover that marriage is not a bed of roses. The nightmare begins. —————— ————- ————- ————- ————- ————- – NO OVERPOWERING Many relationships fail because one party tries to overpower another, or demands too much. People in love tend to think that love will conquer all and their spouses will change the bad habits after marriage. Actually, this is not the case. There is a Chinese saying which carries the meaning that “It is easier to reshape a mountain or a river than a person’s character.” It is not easy to change. Thus, having high expectation on changing the spouse character will cause disappointment and unpleasantness. It would be less painful to change ourselves and lower our expectations. . —————— ————- ————- ————- ————- ————- – RIGHT SPEECH There is a Chinese saying which carries the meaning that “A speech will either prosper or ruin a nation.” Many relationships break off because of wrong speech. When a couple is too close with each other, we always forget mutual respect and courtesy. We may say anything without considering if it would hurt the other party. A friend and her millionaire husband visited their construction site. A worker who wore a helmet saw her and shouted, “Hi, Emily! Remember me? We used to date in the secondary school.” On the way home, her millionaire husband teased her, “Luckily you married me. Otherwise you will be the wife of a construction worker.” She answered,“You should appreciate that you married me. Other wise, he will be the millionaire and not you.” Frequently exchanging these remarks plants the seed for a bad relationship. It’s like a broken egg – cannot be reversed. —————— ————- ————- ————- ————- ————- – PERSONAL PERCEPTION Different people have different perception. One man’s meat could be another man’s poison. A couple bought a donkey from the market. On the way home, a boy commented, “Very stupid. Why neither of them ride on the donkey? “Upon hearing that, the husband let the wife ride on the donkey. He walked besides them. Later, an old man saw it and commented, “The husband is the head of family. How can the wife ride on the donkey while the husband is on foot?” Hearing this, the wife quickly got down and let the husband ride on the donkey.
Further on the way home, they met an old Lady. She commented,
“How can the man ride on the donkey but let the wife walk. He
is no gentleman.” It seems to be the only choice left. Later, on a nar row bridge, the donkey was frightened and struggled. They lost their balance and fell into the river. You can never have everyone praise you, nor will everyone condemn you. Never in the past, not at present, and never will be in the future. Thus, do not be too bothered by others words if our conscience is clear.. —————— ————- ————- ————- ————- ————- – BE PATIENT This is a true story which happened in the States. A man came out of his home to admire his new truck. To his puzzlement, his three-year-old son was happily hammering dents into the shiny paint of the truck. The man ran to his son, knocked him away, hammered the little boy’s hands into pulp as punishment. When the father calmed down, he rushed his son to the hospital. Although the doctor tried desperately to save the crushed bones, he finally had to amputate the fingers from both the boy’s hands. When the boy woke up from the surgery & saw his bandaged stubs, he innocently said, “Daddy, I’m sorry about your truck.” Then he asked, “but when are my fingers going to grow back?” The father went home & committed suicide. Think about this story the next time someone steps on your feet or u wish to take revenge. Think first before u lose your patience with someone u love. Trucks can be repaired.. Broken bones & hurt feelings often can’t. Too often we fail to recognize the difference between the person and the performance. We forget that forgiveness is greater than revenge. People make mistakes. We are allowed to make mistakes. But the actions we take while in a rage will haunt us forever. “Good Life starts only when you stop wanting a better One” “ Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away |

Mandira Bedi lands in flag controversy Posted: 29 Apr 2007 10:26 PM GMT-06:00 Actress and cricket commentator Mandira Bedi has landed in a bit of trouble with a complaint against her for showing disrespect to the national flag. Gyan Prakash Kamra, a Jaipur resident, has accused Mandira of disrespecting the tricolour by wearing it as a design on her sari. The actress, while hosting a show on Set Max channel during the final of the World Cup Saturday, wore a sari that had the national flags of 16 participating countries printed on it. India’s flag, however, found place near her knees, which allegedly violates the Flag Code. “She has shown disrespect to our national flag. So I have lodged a police complaint against her under Section 2 of the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971,” Kamra told IANS. Mandira later changed the sari and apologised on the television. “I had kept this sari specially to wear on the day of the final but if I have offended anybody’s sentiments, I offer my deep apology. It was inadvertent and not intentional. I am proud of being an Indian and do not have any intention to show disrespect to the national flag,” she said. But Kamra says her apology only makes his case stronger. “Her apology does not matter. On the contrary, it makes my case stronger as she has accepted that she did it,” he said. Mandira had earlier angered Sikh authorities for using a Sikh religious symbol on her body as a tattoo. She then sent a signed apology to the Akal Takht, the highest body of Sikh religious affairs, expressing regret over hurting Sikh sentiments by displaying an “Ek Omkar” tattoo in Gurmukhi on her bare back during a fashion show in Mumbai recently. Mandira, who became famous as a TV star with her role in the serial “Shanti” a decade ago, has recently been creating waves by becoming a studio cricket commentator in the live show “Extraa Innings” – rubbing shoulders with top cricketers of yesteryears. This is the second cricket World Cup for which she has been engaged by Sony’s Set Max channel. |

Why India Can't Kiss Some Controversies Goodbye - With Public Opinion Videos Posted: 29 Apr 2007 10:03 PM GMT-06:00 Can we handle a kiss in public? When asked to Pooja Bedi that can Indians see people kiss each other in public, she said, “I just want to say one thing at the beginning I love the witticism but the issue is so much more deeper and grave than that. This moral policing has to stop. You look at operation majnu Meerut where they attacked couple for just being together. In a cosmopolitan city like Mumbai where couples are hauled up for hugging each other and holding each other. What have we come to? I don’t think it’s a voice a majority.” “I don’t think there is anything wrong in showing affection in hugging someone showing that you love somebody. There is difference between affection and obscenity like you have to do a lip lock or tongue kissing may be that something too much to digest but if a person being affectionate, I think nothing wrong in that,” she added. But who decides what is affection when does it cross over to obscenity who decides that a kiss is ok a hug is fine or a lip lock is not. Pooja Bedi argued, ”Exactly that’s the point that need to be addressed. That is an issue that needs to be taken up in the court with people that they need to formulate laws that define clearly what is obscenity what is vulgarity and what is just affection.” Shilpa Shetty has said that she has no problem with the kissing and there was no problem. What did you find objectionable about Shilpa- Gere’s kiss? Taking a cue from the argument Poonam Chand said, “It is offence in IPC under Section 284. If someone does an obscene at in a public place and it annoys others then it is an offence. If someone does not annoy others then its not offence. It’s not a PIL, I have filed a criminal complaint. Shilpa Shetty no aware of the fact that it is an offence. Guilty must be punished.”

'Foolish to Think India Can be Destabilized' : Pakistani Leader Posted: 29 Apr 2007 09:55 PM GMT-06:00 Pakistani Kashmiri leader Sardar Abdul Qayyum Khan, who once backed insurgency in Jammu and Kashmir, has confessed it was foolish to have imagined that India could be destabilized militarily. Khan – a former president and prime minister of Pakistani Kashmir ( or Azad Kashmir as Pakistan calls it) – said India was too big to be shaken up. ‘It was foolish to imagine that India can be won militarily,’ said the senior leader of the Muslim Conference, which rules ‘Azad Kashmir’, and who once used to be known as ‘Mujahid-e-Awal’ (First Holy Warrior) – for his open support to the separatist campaign in Jammu and Kashmir. Pakistan has been long accused of giving arms and training to Kashmiris to fight Indian rule in Jammu and Kashmir. The 17-year-old insurgency has left thousands dead besides devastating the society. The 80-year-old Khan, now one of the moderate voices from Pakistan, wants to think objectively vis-a-vis the divided Kashmir. His son, Sardar Ateeq Ullah Khan, is the current ‘prime minister’ of ‘Azad Kashmir’. ‘We want to transform Kashmir from a dispute (between Pakistan and India) to a bridge between the two nations,’ Khan told IANS, speaking on the sidelines of a meeting held at the Observer Research Foundation here. |

Vista's Dreamscene wallpaper causes reboot, starts chkdsk, deletes dll file Posted: 01 May 2007 12:36 AM CDT The Vista laptop got itself a bit confused today. At one point it rebooted itself and then decided that there was something wrong with the hard drive as it invoked chkdsk. That found several problems with some windows DLL files so decided to delete them and hopefully reinstalled them later. When it had finished that it started OK except that the the Windows Dreamscene Content I used for wallpaper had been replaced with a plain black wallpaper. Vista did pop up a window saying there was a problem with it….. |

Yahoo on an offensive strategy against Google Posted: 30 Apr 2007 11:36 PM CDT Yahoo, which bought a 20 percent stake in Right Media in October 2006, will pay approximately $680 million, in equal parts of stock and cash, for the remaining interest in the company called Right Media, which is based in New York. This looks like a offensive strategy for Yahoo against Google’s recent Doubleclick acquisition. |

Funny Joke - How to Kill an Eel (16+) Posted: 30 Apr 2007 08:44 PM CDT Little Johnny was 12 years old and, like other boys his age, rather curious. He had been hearing quite a bit about “courting” from the older boys and he wondered what it was and how it was done. One day he took his questions to his mother who became rather flustered. Instead of explaining “things” to Johnny, she told him to hide behind the curtains one night and watch his older sister and her boyfriend. This he did. The following morning Johnny described everything he saw to his mother… “Sis and her boyfriend sat and talked for a while, then he turned off most of the lights. Then he started kissing and hugging her, I figured sis must be getting sick because her face started looking funny. He must have thought so too, because he put his hand inside her blouse to feel her heart, just like the doctor would. Except he’s not as smart as the doctor, because he seemed to have trouble finding her heart. I guess he was getting sick too, because pretty soon both of them started panting and getting all out of breath. His other hand must have been cold because he put it under her skirt. About this time sis got worse and began to moan and sigh and squirm around and slide down toward the end of the couch. This was when the fever started. I knew it was a fever because sis told him she was really hot. Finally, I found what was making them so sick – a big eel had gotten inside his pants somehow. It just jumped out of his pants and stood there, about ten inches long. Honest! Anyway, he grabbed it in one hand to keep it from getting away. Whatchamaclit, when sis saw it, she got really scared, her eyes got big and her mouth fell open and she started calling to God and what not. She said it was the biggest one she’d ever seen – I should tell her about the ones down at the lake. Anyway, sis got brave and tried to kill the eel by biting its head off. All of a sudden she made a noise and let the eel go, I guess it bit her back. Then she grabbed it with both hands and held it tight while he took a muzzle out of his pocket and slipped it over the eel’s head to keep it from biting again. Sis laid back and spread her legs so she could get a scissor-lock on it and he helped her by laying on top of the eel. The eel put up a helluva fight. Sis started moaning and squealing and her boyfriend almost upset the couch. I guess they wanted to kill the eel. After a while, they both quit moving and gave a great sigh. Her boyfriend got up and sure enough they had killed the eel. I knew it was dead because it just hung there limp, and some of its insides were hanging out. Sis and her boyfriend were a little tired from the battle, but they went back to courting anyway. He started hugging and kissing her again. By golly, the eel wasn’t dead! It jumped straight up and started to fight again, I guess that eel’s are like cats, they have nine lives or something. This time, sis jumped up and tried to kill the eel by sitting on it. After a 35-minute struggle they finally killed it again. I knew it was dead this time because I saw sis’s boyfriend peel its skin off and flush it down the toilet!” |

Fun And Cool Idea: Pop Art Toaster Posted: 30 Apr 2007 08:39 PM CDT This “pop art” toaster (so clever, these marketers) comes with six preset designs, and none of them feature any religious iconography that’ll net you 10 grand on eBay. Which begs the question: Why would you want to burn lame, cutesy designs like flowers into your toast? They just make your toast taste burnt. If I wanted burnt toast and cheese, I’d make a grilled cheese, not drop $35 on this toaster. – Matt Buchanan |

Stunning Discovery : Music Decoded From 600-Year-Old Carvings Posted: 02 May 2007 01:01 AM CDT
A Scottish church which featured in the best-selling novel “The
Da Vinci Code” has revealed another mystery hidden in secret
code for almost 600 years. Thomas Mitchell, a 75-year-old musician and ex-Royal Air Force code breaker, and his composer and pianist son Stuart, described the piece as “frozen music.” “The music has been frozen in time by symbolism,” Mitchell said on his Web site (www.tjmitchell.com/stuart/rosslyn.html), which details the 27-year project to crack the chapel’s code. |

Top 15 Geek Blog Sites - Dun Miss If You Are a Geek! Posted: 02 May 2007 12:54 AM CDT Some blogs educate, help people collaborate, spark ideas and just plain expand our thought universe. Others stir emotions and anger us or make us laugh. The editors of Computerworld got together and offered up a list of their favorite blog sites. We pared down more than 50 submissions to the top 15 technology blog sites based on breadth of information, newsworthiness, design, frequency of updates and entertainment value. Sure, the list is subjective, but we think this is one of the best catalogs of blogs that has ever been published. The entries ran the gamut, from serious technology news and reviews to commentary on games and the latest tech gadgets. We included some honorable mentions at the end because the competition was so close. Of course, not everyone will agree with our selection. If you think a blog site that’s not on our list deserved a top 15 spot, share it with us in the comments section. |

Breaking News : Digg Stops Story Submission : Kevin Rose Addresses The Users (His Blog Entry) Posted: 02 May 2007 12:48 AM CDT Today was an insane day. And as the founder of Digg, I just wanted to post my thoughts… In building and shaping the site I’ve always tried to stay as hands on as possible. We’ve always given site moderation (digging/burying) power to the community. Occasionally we step in to remove stories that violate our terms of use (eg. linking to pornography, illegal downloads, racial hate sites, etc.). So today was a difficult day for us. We had to decide whether to remove stories containing a single code based on a cease and desist declaration. We had to make a call, and in our desire to avoid a scenario where Digg would be interrupted or shut down, we decided to comply and remove the stories with the code. But now, after seeing hundreds of stories and reading thousands of comments, you’ve made it clear. You’d rather see Digg go down fighting than bow down to a bigger company. We hear you, and effective immediately we won’t delete stories or comments containing the code and will deal with whatever the consequences might be. If we lose, then what the hell, at least we died trying. Digg on, Kevin |

HP 2355 printer driver needs .net & IIS to install Posted: 01 May 2007 11:53 PM CDT I was asked to scan a document on my XP machine at the weekend. Hadn’t done any scanning in a year and needless to say it didn’t work. I remember the HP printer software was a classic case of bloatware and was not that easy to use. Stuck the HP cd in the drive to reinstall the drivers and after a few minutes thrashing about it displayed a message that on slower computers it could take 35 minutes to complete the setup process. That’s a lot of time for a printer driver, but of course that would have been 1 minute for the driver to install plus a further 34 minutes for the bloatware….......... |

Converting VOB files, DVD Decrypter & Sony Vegas Posted: 03 May 2007 01:22 AM CDT Somebody suggested DVD Decrypter to convert VOB files to a format that Windows Move Maker recognises. Its appears that this software is for copying copy protected DVD’s. It’ll also remove region codes and it’s illegal to use in the US…....... |

Posted: 03 May 2007 12:57 AM CDT The pace at which city dwellers walk has increased by 10 per cent in the last decade, a new study has shown. The findings, from 32 countries, reflect the fact that increasing numbers of people are living in the fast lane. Teams with stop watches timed how long it took 35 men and women to walk along a 60ft stretch of pavement. Comparing the results with those compiled by US psychologist Professor Robert Levine in the 1990s, the study showed that people were, on average, now walking 10 per cent faster. Men are generally 25 per cent quicker on their feet than women. |

The Terminal: 2 Men Spend 48 Days at IGI airport in Delhi ; Staying Cost = 1 Lakh Paid By Air India Posted: 03 May 2007 12:38 AM CDT The Maharaja had to play host to Masood Rana and Subhash, the two Bangladeshi transit passengers who spent 48 days at IGI Airport’s transit lounge before finally flying back home to Dhaka on April 26, as per aviation rules for the period of their stay at the airport. Since this place has no ‘cheap’ eatery, the average cost of three meals a day was a cool Rs 2,000. The two had to be sent to hospital three to four times for check-ups under police protection to ensure they returned to the airport. In all, the airline ended up spending about a lakh during this time. “The two seemed to be labourers who go to the Gulf with dreams of petro-dollar salaries. They got so bored here that they would often request the eatery staff to give them some work – not to earn money, but to pass time! They were quiet people who kept to themselves and never created a scene out of frustration,” said a source. |

After Steve Waugh Blasts 'Horrible' Cricket WC Telecast in India, Indian Bloggers Attack Set Max Posted: 03 May 2007 12:34 AM CDT The Indian cricket fan would want to forget the just-concluded World Cup as a nightmare but the double whammy of the national team’s shocking exit and atrocious TV coverage would leave bitter memories for a long, long time. Former Australian cricket captain Steve Waugh, who was in India during the World Cup, gave vent to his disgust by stating that the telecast in India was “unwatchable”. “It is annoying, ridiculous and an insult to the game to see an advertisement being squeezed in just because the bowler has not reached the top of his run-up,” the Australian great wrote in a newspaper column, cautioning that “somebody needs to protect the game from becoming devalued in this manner”. Angry cricket fans are going online to flay SET Max for its TV coverage, but the channel appears to be unconcerned. Expressing ignorance about Waugh’s comments, a spokesperson for the channel said, “we showed the whole game. The advertisements were shown at the end of an over”—a statement that insults millions who suffered the telecast. Bloggers have accused the channel of robbing the viewers’ pleasure with its “senseless timing” of ads to make “a little extra money”. |

Change your diet, pep up your sex life Posted: 02 May 2007 11:56 PM CDT Female sexual dysfunction (FSD) includes a variety of disorders that are related to desire for sex, arousal during sexual activity, problems with orgasm or pain during sexual activity. It can wreak havoc in even the most loving relationships. It is also an extremely complex problem with a variety of possible causes, including illness, menopause, weight gain, poor nutrition, stress and psychological factors. While manufacturers are locked in a race to find a chemical solution, a new, scientifically proven diet from the US suggests that a combination of fish oils, dark chocolate and controlling carbohydrate intake may be all that’s needed. In her book The Orgasmic Diet, author Marrena Lindberg has created a programme that she says not only boosts the sex drive, but aids weight loss, too. Four simple steps, which Marrena says, will help bring back libido in days. She advises women suffering from sexual dysfunction to boost their intake of fish oils, control serotonin levels, and increase testosterone and eat libido foods. |

Call for Australia to boycot Zimbabwe tour Posted: 02 May 2007 11:51 PM CDT Australia’s victorious World Cup Cricket team has arrived home to calls for a boycott of their upcoming limited overs tour of Zimbabwe due in September. The Catholic Archbishop of Bulawayo, Pius Ncube, a vociferous critic of the autoractic president Roberty Mugabe, said the Prime Minister, John Howard, should direct the team remain in Australia, warning that the tour will be used to legitimise a regime internationally condemned for its human rights abuses. Cricket Australia is said to face a $2 million fine if it fails to field a side for the international fixture and at this stage only an independent, adverse security assessment will prevent the tour from going ahead. Speaking at the Lowy Institute today, Archbishop Ncube said the international community should use every means possible to pressure Robert Mugabe to accept democractic reforms. Visiting sporting teams added legitimacy to the regime. During the opening of the 2003 World Cup Match in Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe captain Andy Flower and fast bowler Henry Olonga, wore black arm-bands to highlight “the death of democracy’‘ in their country. Bowler Stuart MacGill boycotted a 2004 tour. |

Posted: 02 May 2007 11:47 PM CDT YAHOO, the world’s second-largest supplier of instant-messaging, is offering a new version that works inside a web browser.
By dispensing with the need to install and run a separate IM
program, Yahoo is looking to reach out to tens of millions of
consumers around the world who use the web in internet cafes
instead of on personal computers at work or at home. “Too many people have been restricted from benefiting from this type of communication,” Yahoo senior vice president in charge of communications Brad Garlinghouse said. The introduction of web-based IM paves the way for Yahoo to eventually allow the rapid-fire text communication service in the member profile pages of social networking services such as MySpace, Facebook or other sites popular with young users. |

Google home page bug strikes again Posted: 02 May 2007 11:46 PM CDT
Google renamed and upgraded its Personalised Home Page this
week, but one thing the update couldn’t shake was a bug that
began upsetting many users last Thursday and persisted until
Wednesday. The problem rattled users who spend significant time and effort tailoring their Google.com page with syndicated content feeds, as well as with “gadget” applications, to make it their hub for web content, online services and applications. A source familiar with the issue says the bug affected “a single digit percentage” of users of this service, which company officials have said has “tens of millions” of users. This means that the number of affected users could range from a minimum of 200,000 to several million. |

Even rural India shining: Survey Posted: 02 May 2007 11:43 PM CDT Signs of economic development are becoming more visible even in rural India with the number of households owning cars, motorcycles and television sets increasing significantly in recent years. The number of rural households possessing cars or jeeps has grown four times between 1993-94 and 2004-05, according to the 61st survey conducted by the National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO). In urban areas, households possessing cars or jeeps have gone up from 1.2 per cent in 1993-94 to 4.6 per cent in 2004-05. Similarly, motorcycle or scooter owners have increased from 11.6 per cent to 26.0 per cent. The survey results reflect the country’s expanding economy, which has been growing over 8 per cent in last three years and more than five per cent in the last decade. The survey also indicated that possession of durable goods, with the exception of radio, is on the increase in rural and urban areas. Millionaires adopt abandoned baby Posted: 02 May 2007 11:41 PM CDT Two and a half month old Shiv, abandoned on a train in Khandwa in Madhya Pradesh, has finally got a family. Found abandoned on Feb 14 on a train travelling through Madhya Pradesh, the child has been at the centre of a legal battle for the past few months. Soon after he was found, two families stepped forward. The Ahujas from Khandwa and the Gehlots from Mumbai, both wanted to adopt the child. Finally, their claims were decided by the court on Wednesday. And the lucky parents are Anjana and Bhagwandas Ahuja. The baby has been in a hospital all this while, where he was named Shiv by the hospital staff because he kept looking at a picture of the the Hindu God Shiva. Little Shiv’s new parents say they will make sure the boy doesn’t lack for anything. The Gehlots, though disappointed by the court’s verdict, are happy the baby has finally found a home. They hope they can find another Shiv. Meanwhile, little Shiv is unaware of the drama in the past couple of months. He also doesn’t realise that his new parents are millionaires. But what he is sure to feel is the love of his new parents. |

Congress demands CBI probe into Gujarat fake killing Posted: 02 May 2007 11:39 PM CDT The fake encounter issue in Narendra Modi-led Gujarat erupted in the Lok Sabha on Thursday with Congress demanding a CBI probe alleging that there have been 21 such encounters in the state “at the instance of the chief minister”. Raising the issue during zero hour, Madhusudan Mistri said the findings of the Supreme Court ordered inquiry has revealed that a person belonging to a minority community was killed by police in broad daylight. Mistri, who was supported by Left parties and the RJD, wanted a statement from the Union Home Minister and a CBI probe. Alleging that 21 encounters have taken place “at the instance of the state home minister and the chief minister”, he said only a CBI inquiry could be helpful as the state government would try to protect its people. He said the arrest of three police officials in the fake encounter had shown the “collusion” of the state government. |

Gilchrist feels he tested the patience of selectors Posted: 04 May 2007 12:51 AM CDT MELBOURNE, May 4: Had Adam Gilchrist been a selector, he would have long dropped himself from the Australian ranks and the opener feels he really tested the patience of national selectors with his stretch of poor run. The Australian vice-captain produced one of the most memorable knocks of his spectacular career with a blistering 149 in the finals against Sri Lanka. But Gilchrist said he “fretted” about his performance right up until the day of the final before he cut loose. “I do not know that one individual day can get any better than the way that day went, but I don’t know if that means that I am at the top of my game. The day before that I was fretting about not contributing to the World Cup with a high total,” Gilchrist was quoted as saying in The Age. “From a selfish and individual perspective, it was really pleasing to finally pass the three-figure mark in a World Cup game. “I would imagine I have played about 31 or 32 World Cup innings and I am not a selector but I would not be picking too many players as a selector if they were the results. But to get it on the occasion that it was a great thrill,” he said. Thirty-five-year old Gilchrist does not have any immediate plans of joining the Australian retirement bandwagon. “There’s an excitement there, there is still a love for the game,” Gilchrist said. |

YouTube, eBay win 'Oscars of the Internet' Posted: 04 May 2007 12:46 AM CDT NEW YORK: Video sharing website YouTube, the eBay online auction community and rock icon David Bowie were among the winners announced of this year’s Webby Awards, the so-called “Oscars of the Internet.” The awards honor online excellence and are considered the leading international gongs for websites, interactive advertising and online video. YouTube co-founders Steve Chen and Chad Hurley, who came up with the idea of people posting video clips on a shared website, were to receive the Webby person of the year award for the fantastically successful site. YouTube had played a key role in “transforming the media landscape and reshaping everything from politics to pop culture,” the Webby organizers said. Rock legend David Bowie was to pick up a lifetime achievement award for pushing the boundaries of art and technology with UltraStar, his digital media company that creates online content for The Rolling Stones and The Police. He also runs BowieArt, a website that connects emerging visual artists with collectors, and launched BowieNet, an Internet service provider, in 1998. The more than 200 million users of online auction platform eBay were also to receive a lifetime award for “a cultural phenomenon” that had “permanently changed the way people connect, discover and interact with each other.” “The Webby winners and special achievement honorees represent the very best in online creativity and innovation,” Webby Awards executive director David-Michel Davies said in a statement, announcing the winners. “We’re proud to salute the people and organizations whose ideas and vision are transforming how we experience the world,” he said. Past winners of Webbies include pop icon Prince and former vice-president Al Gore, who memorably used his acceptance speech — limited to a maximum of five words — to ask the judges: “Please don’t recount this vote.” The winners are selected by the 550-member International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, whose members include “The Simpsons” creator Matt Groening, columnist and writer Arianna Huffington and Hollywood Titan Harvey Weinstein. Winners of the almost 70 categories in the 11th annual awards are to be honored at a ceremony in New York on June 5. |

Malinga Voted 'The Sexiest Man in Cricket' !!! Posted: 04 May 2007 12:33 AM CDT Slinga’ Mailnga may not have set the World Cup final on fire but his cool dude attitude has won him the tag of ‘the sexiest man in cricket’, beating the likes of Brain Lara, Andrew Flintoff, Shaun Tait, Chris Gayle and Kevin Pietersen. The contest to pick the ‘sexiest men in cricket’ was conducted by ‘Easy Magazine’ of the Barbados ‘Sunday Sun’ newspaper and a discerning panel chose Lasith Malinga over Daniel Vettori, Shaun Tait, Chris Gayle and Kevin Pietersen, Brain Lara, Andrew Flintoff and Makhaya Ntini. The panel described Malinga as — “with his eye-catching, blond-streaked curly hairdo, eyebrow ring and tattooed biceps, the unique 23-old strikes ‘easy’ as the type who would be up for anything… and anywhere. “The Sri Lankans have brought life to this World Cup with their exuberant, joyful cricket and none more so than the wild child, ‘Malinga the Slinga’,” it said. However, Malinga shifted everyone’s attention from his weird hairdo with his record four wicket burst in four balls against the South Africans. |

France planet-hunter makes first find Posted: 04 May 2007 12:31 AM CDT A French space probe designed to look for worlds orbiting other stars has made its first find, a ‘hot Jupiter’ that zips closely around a sun some 1,500 light years away, the National Centre for Space Studies (CNES) said on Thursday. The planet-hunter, named Corot, was launched last December 27. The find, named Corot-Exo-1b, is between 200,000 and 250,000 kilometres in diameter and has a mass about 1.3 times that of Jupiter, the largest planet of our Solar System, CNES informed. |

Man held for trial-room indecency Posted: 04 May 2007 12:22 AM CDT KOLKATA: When the 34-year-old woman closed the door of the trial room at a popular discount store on Thursday morning, a pair of jeans she was clutching was all that was on her mind. But when a cellphone popped up from under the door, the impressive cloth was soon forgotten. A salesman, who tried to click her picture, has landed in jail after the woman single-handedly took him on at the store near the Tangra crossing on Park Circus connector. The woman, who lives in the nearby Vrindavan Garden complex, had just entered the trial room when she noticed a strange movement under the door. Someone was stealthily reaching out through the gap below the door, trying to click photographs with a cellphone camera. She instinctively lunged at the hand but failed to grab it. Furious with what had happened, she rushed out to see a salesman attempting to flee. She ran after the man and caught him at a turn in the store. When she attempted to grab the cellphone, the salesman — later identified as 21-year-old Sunil Kumar Jha — resisted. He then lunged at the customer, forcing her to leap back in defence. All the while, two fellow store employees — Sauman Majhi and Madan Babu — remained mute spectators, refusing to intervene even as fellow colleague outraged a customer’s modesty. With no help forthcoming from store employees, the woman first called home and then went to Topsia police station to lodge a complaint. Police later arrested Jha, Mahji and Babu. Said DCP (eastern suburban division) P S Ghosh, ``Three persons were arrested and the mobile phone has been confiscated.’‘ Ghosh said Jha was unable to click the photograph. ``He has been booked for molestation and Majhi and Babu have been booked for abetting the crime.’‘ |

Buchanan turned his back on potential Indian offer Posted: 04 May 2007 12:16 AM CDT MELBOURNE, May 4: John Buchanan has turned down a potentially lucrative approach from India, but the outgoing Australian mentor has not entirely ruled out a return to international coaching in the future. Buchanan confirmed that he was “indirectly” approached before leaving for the Caribbean World Cup by Indian officials, who were keen to gauge his interest in succeeding Greg Chappell as their coach after the World Cup. But after almost eight years at the helm of Australia, Buchanan was not immediately ready for another international assignment and, accordingly, did not follow up the Indian approach. Still, the veteran coach said he would retain an open mind regarding overseas opportunities. “There was some indirect contact from India,” Buchanan was quoted as saying by The Age on Friday. “But at the moment I am looking for new challenges as a mentor coach, and speaking to Cricket Australia and the Australian Sports Commission about that, as well as a move into corporate coaching.” “Yes, there is still some interest (in international coaching). But, and it’s a big but, it would be very much dependent upon my family.” “I really want to be around for that period of (my children’s) schooling. But that probably takes me to my late-50s, and if I would like to specifically be involved in the game, maybe I’ll have passed my used-by date by then.” Buchanan will leave the game as Australia’s most successful coach. Since he took over from Geoff Marsh in 1999, Australian teams have won three-quarters of all Test and One-day matches played under him. But Buchanan’s tenure will also be remembered for its relentless pursuit of innovation, including the appointment of an American base baller as fielding coach and last summer’s pre-Ashes “boot camp”. At the end of the unsuccessful 2005 Ashes campaign, Buchanan considered standing down from his post which proved an inspired move. Since then, Australia has reclaimed the Ashes 5-0 and completed an undefeated World Cup campaign. “It is a fairytale,” he said and added “after the Ashes in 2005 I looked at whether or not I was really required and had to answer those questions. “But the last three tournaments – the ICC Champions Trophy, the Ashes and then the World Cup – to win three of those is an unbelievable finale.” |

World has eight years left to save climate: UN Posted: 03 May 2007 11:53 PM CDT Climate experts and representatives from 105 countries on Friday released a 24-page report on means of mitigating the worse impacts of global warming after five days of heated debates to reach a consensus on the document. The report, which focuses on the economic implications and technological options for tackling global warming, states that emissions must start declining by 2015 to prevent the world’s temperature from rising more than two degrees Celsius over pre-industrialised temperatures. The report also states that the low costs of buying insurance, through the use of technologies currently available, to avoid a climatic catastrophe in the coming decades is less than 0.1 per cent of world GDP per annum. “The naysayers have always said that this will wreck our economies,” said Hans Verolme, director of the World Wildlife Fund for Nature’s (WWF’s) Global Climate Change Programme. Verolme adds that the cost of doing nothing is 20 times worse than paying for technologies today. “It’s a great report and the conclusions are quite strong,” said Greenpeace’s Bill Hare, one of the lead authors of the report. The panel’s first report, released on February in Paris, confirmes that global warming was happening while the second, issued in April in Brussels, focused on the impact of the phenomenon on the world’s populations and species. China played a lead role in the third report by sending the largest delegation to Bangkok. The Bangkok meeting of the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) attracted 30 of the world’s leading climate experts and more than 217 government representatives from 105 countries whose task it is to fine-tune the report, which seeks international consensus on how to reduce greenhouse gases and, perhaps more importantly, how much it would cost. Many climate experts claim that the costs of saving the planet are miniscule compared with global warming’s potential damages, but it is important that politicians also acknowledge this in the IPCC’s third report of 2007. |

How Fast Do Search Engines Index Fresh Content Posted: 03 May 2007 11:49 PM CDT Yesterday was a unique day in the blogosphere. Following the crackdown by Digg staff, the infamous hex key – 09 f9 11 02 9d 74 e3 5b d8 41 56 c5 63 56 88 c0 – was written all over the Internet from blogs to news portals to social websites. Legal issues apart, this mutiny at Digg gives us a great opportunity to compare the indexing behaviour of search engines and how frequently search bots scroll the web in pursuit of fresh content. We executed a search for 09 f9 11 02 9d 74 e3 5b d8 41 56 c5 63 56 88 c0 (without quotes) on all major web and blogs search engines and here are the results. |

Darker Side of Blogging Freedom : US Army Squeezes Soldier Blogs,to Death Posted: 03 May 2007 11:44 PM CDT The U.S. Army has ordered soldiers to stop posting to blogs or sending personal e-mail messages, without first clearing the content with a superior officer, Wired News has learned. The directive, issued April 19, is the sharpest restriction on troops’ online activities since the start of the Iraq war. And it could mean the end of military blogs, observers say. Military officials have been wrestling for years with how to handle troops who publish blogs. Officers have weighed the need for wartime discretion against the opportunities for the public to personally connect with some of the most effective advocates for the operations in Afghanistan and Iraq — the troops themselves. The secret-keepers have generally won the argument, and the once-permissive atmosphere has slowly grown more tightly regulated. Soldier-bloggers have dropped offline as a result. |

TV No Longer Means What It Used To Posted: 03 May 2007 11:42 PM CDT “Television programs” more than ever before are coming to mean “episodic video content” rather than “entertainment and informational programming that comes out of a blue glow-emitting box.” Consider that almost half of European broadband users now watch television programs on a computer, according to BBC News. And when you consider the massive popularity of YouTube – which has “trained” people to enjoy online video content programming that is often low budget and low quality in nature – it only stands to reason that traditional television products will be increasingly integrated into the online experience. |

Must Read : Virtual Rape Is Traumatic, but Is It a Crime? Posted: 03 May 2007 11:32 PM CDT Last month, two Belgian publications reported that the Brussels police have begun an investigation into a citizen’s allegations of rape — in Second Life. I am half convinced that the tantalizingly brief story, printed in De Morgen and Het Laatste Nieuws, is a hoax or an April Fool’s joke. Yet it has prompted several threads of discussion, from a legal analysis to four pages of commentary at the Second Citizen forums. Unfortunately, rape in virtual spaces is not unheard of. And I’m not talking about the “consensual” rape built into some games (although if you’re interested in that debate, GameGrene has a good conversation about it). There is no question that forced online sexual activity — whether through text, animation, malicious scripts or other means — is real; and is a traumatic experience that can have a profound and unpleasant aftermath, shaking your faith in yourself, in the community, in the platform, even in sex itself. Our laws say that an adult subjecting a teenager or child to sexual words, images or suggestions on the internet is preying on their mental and emotional state in a sexual way. Even if you never try to meet the minor in person, and even if you never touch them or expose your naked self to them, it is a crime to attempt to engage sexually with a minor. If it is a criminal offense to sexually abuse a child on the internet, how can we say it is not possible to rape an adult online? |

Breaking News : Yahoo To Shut Down Yahoo Photos Posted: 03 May 2007 11:23 PM CDT I am at the annual Outcast CEO Dinner event – Brad Garlinghouse (Yahoo SVP Communications & Communities) and Stewart Butterfield (Cofounder Flickr) are sitting at my table and told me that they will announce the closure of Yahoo Photos tomorrow. The actual closure will occur over the next few months, they say. The service will be shut down in favor of the newer and more social Flickr, which they acquired in March of 2005. There has long been an issue at Yahoo where newer services have competed with older services, and Yahoo has finally taken some strong action to getting their house in order with a consistent set of product offerings. Garlinghouse has been one of the stronger proponents of this strategy. Yahoo is not forcing transition to Flickr – instead, users are being given the option of choosing among a number of top photo sharing sites. If you are a current Yahoo! Photos user, you will be given the option to export all your photos into Flickr (a one-click process) or you will be able to export to a few other services such as Photobucket, Snapfish, Kodak Gallery or Shutterfly. Most of these services have built special tools to transition users, Butterfield said. Users will also be able to download full sized original photos, or order CDs and prints at a discount to the normal price. “We have no interest in forcing anyone to switch to Flickr” Butterfield said. “We want happy users.” |

Modern Medicine versus Nature in Treating Cancer Posted: 04 May 2007 11:51 PM CDT Mainstream medicine views the body as a collection of parts, instead of as a whole organism of interdendent parts. When it comes to treating broken bones and physical injury, mainstream medicine is without equal, but when it comes to treating illness and disease, it fails horrible. Unlike mainstream medicine, nature treats not only the symptom, such as tumor and cancer cells, but also the underlying causes so that cancer is beaten and does not return. |

Mandy Sellars, 32, from Lancashire, suffers from Proteus syndrome, a condition also thought to have affected the “Elephant Man”, Joseph Merrick. Although she was born with abnormally large legs and feet – which continue to grow – her body is of average size. Doctors may have to amputate in the future, but Ms Sellars says she wants to raise awareness before it happens.
Proteus Syndrome is only thought to affect about 120 people
worldwide, which ensures Ms Sellars receives some stares in
public. “I expect people to look – I think that’s quite inevitable because I would if I was in their position – but a smile can bring so much to one person,” she said. She told the BBC of her relief at finally being diagnosed with the condition in May 2006, which allowed her to meet other sufferers. “I wanted to belong,” said Ms Sellars. “I wanted to find other people that had the condition, and to be able to relate to them and them to relate to me and know what it’s like to live with this condition and how different it is.” |

Posted: 04 May 2007 09:18 PM CDT THE STORY OF KRISHNA krishna KRISHNA, one of the avatars of Vishnu is the most glamorous and talked-of character in Indian mythology. Starting from the tales of his amorous acts with gopikas and Radha, to his story of valour and wisdom in the battles with Kamsa etc, and his great preachings to Arjuna in Bhagvad-Gita. The story of the birth of Krishna goes as follows: Once upon a time there lived an evil, wicked and ambitious king by name of Kamsa in Mathura. He plundered the kingdom left and right and lawlessness prevailed in his state. On one of the days a heavenly prophecy from the sky came and echoed, “Kamsa! Your end is near! The eighth son of Devaki, your sister, will be the one responsible for your death.” Kamsa was enraged beyond control and imprisoned Devaki, his sister and Vasudeva her husband. Then he killed every child of the couple as they were born. But just the midnight when the eighth child was born, the skies roared and Lord Vishnu advised Vasudeva to take the child across the river Yamuna to the other side to the village of Gokul and exchange with the daughter of Yashoda in Gokul, who was born on the same day. Vasudeva accordingly put the child in a basket, and as he went out the doors of the prison parted for him as if in a magic. The river parted into two to allow for Vasudeva to cross. Vasudeva then crossed into Gokul and exchanged his son with the daughter of Yashoda who was born the same day and came back. The baby uttered cries which awakened Kamsa, and then happily he went to the prison chamber and snatched the girl baby and as he lifted her in the air, the baby, who was an incarnation of the Devi herself, laughed in glee “Kamsa, your real enemy is still alive. The son of Devaki is alive and well and will come back to kill you”, and then disappeared. Kamsa was outraged beyond wits and started a killing spree of all boys at that age in his kingdom. It was a terror outbreak. Krishna led a very pampered and amorous life in the Gokul, along side thousands of gopikaas, the cowherdesses who were all entralled at his beauty and were thrilled whenever he played the flute. There are numerous playful instances of Krishna, playing mischief with the gopikaas including breaking their butter pots. Many a poets, literarians have described these amorous and mischievious acts as Raas-Lila of Krishna. Among all the gopikaas, one Radha was special to Krishna. There are numerous amorous tales of Radha and Krishna together. Krishna is also known to be a very mischievious child who annoyed Yashoda a lot. A lot of dohas (poems) described by Mirabai, an ardent devotee of Krishna, are very popular which describe the naughty acts of Krishna. Among them the one titled “Maiya Mori Main nahi makhan khayo” is an all-time favourite. It describes the excuses which Krishna gives to his mother yashoda explaining that he was not responsible for stealing of the butter from the gopikaas. Krishna incarnated in this world to eliminate evil elements from this world. There are numerous tales of his bravery since his childhood. Many of the stories are related to the attempts by Kamsa, to kill Krishna after Kamsa came to know that Krishna was in Gokul alive. Some of the tales are given below: 1. The tale of Putana the Rakshasi 2. The tale of Kaliya the serpent 3. The story of BakasuraAs Krishna grew older he left the heavenly Gokul, and the idyllic life alongside Gopis, to go and kill Kamsa. He killed Kamsa, and then settled in Dwaraka along with his brother Balarama and learnt the traditional arts of fighting including archery. He arbitrated in the fight between the Pandavas and Kauravas in Mahabharata. During the war he is well known for his monologue to Arjuna on the battlefield, which is together termed as the Bhagvad Gita. There are many stories of Krishna, starting from his childhood to his death including his role in Mahabarata war, his rule over Dwaraka, his childhood amorous acts with gopikaas including Radha, his winning of wives like Satyabhama etc. We shall be glad to add any story you might want to send in. Please send us any story you might have regarding Lord Krishna for any stage of his life. |

Buoyant Bangladesh await India Posted: 05 May 2007 11:22 PM GMT-06:00 DHAKA, May 6: Bangladesh’s increasingly confident cricketers host India from Monday determined to build on a remarkable World Cup campaign and provide a perfect send-off for coach Dav Whatmore. Bangladesh can no longer be dismissed as cricketing minnows after knocking out India in the World Cup first round before stunning the mighty South Africa in the Super Eights stage. A grateful Bangladesh Cricket Board rewarded the team for its best-ever showing in the showpiece event with a bonus of approximately $25,000 for each player and the support staff led by Whatmore. An official celebratory dinner for captain Habibur Bashar’s men at a local hotel on Saturday night was attended by top figures in the interim government who joined in congratulating each member of the squad. A special cheer was reserved for Whatmore, 53, the former Australian Test batsman who guided Sri Lanka to World Cup victory in 1996 before turning Bangladesh into a force to be reckoned with. He ends his four-year association with Bangladesh after the tour by India, where he is considered a strong candidate to replace fellow Australian Greg Chappell as the national team’s coach. Bangladesh cricket chief Abdul Aziz said at Saturday’s dinner the nation will “always be grateful to Whatmore for turning the team into a proud group of world beaters.” An emotional Whatmore said he was focused on the series against India, but did not rule out returning to Bangladesh at a latter stage to help develop cricket in the country. “I am proud and honoured to have been associated with Bangladesh,” he said. “It was great working with such a dedicated bunch of players who did all the hard work out there on the field. “It is time to move on but I hope to return to Bangladesh some day in the future.” Since Whatmore took over in 2003, Bangladesh defeated established cricket nations like world champions Australia, India (twice), Sri Lanka, and South Africa in One-day matches. They also secured their only Test victory so far, against Zimbabwe, but Whatmore admitted the team had a long way to go before it could be counted among world’s top teams. “The journey has only just begun but they are on the right path,” he said. “There is more self-belief among the players than before and that is a good sign.” Captain Bashar echoed his coach’s assessment, saying the team now approached each series with confidence, knowing they were capable of matching the best. “We are not overawed by our rivals,” he said. “We know that if we play good cricket, we can defeat any team.” India, who will arrive here on Monday under interim coach Ravi Sastri, enjoy a superior record against Bangladesh, having won 13 of their 15 One-dayers and all three Test matches so far. But Bangladeshi fans, reflecting the optimism in the team, believe it will be a battle of equals when the series begins with the first One-dayer in Dhaka on Thursday. “I hope India do not think that World Cup win was a fluke,” said Dhaka university student Aftab Baten. “Our boys are just as good. They will be even better at home.” The three One-dayers on May 10, 12 and 15 will be followed by two Tests at Chittagong (May 18-22) and Dhaka (May 25-29). |

What Paris Can Expect Behind Bars Posted: 05 May 2007 11:06 PM GMT-06:00 (AP/Los Angeles) — Paris Hilton better like chicken. The hotel heiress was sentenced Friday to 45 days at the Century Regional Detention Center, Los Angeles County’s jailhouse for women just south of downtown in Lynwood. Inmates get three low-sodium meals a day, with dinner the only hot meal. Beef and pork aren’t permitted?“it’s all poultry-based,” said Capt. Alice Scott, who oversees the 2,200-inmate facility she describes as “a very nice place.” Like other high-profile Los Angeles County inmates — O.J. Simpson, Robert Blake, Robert Mitchum, Sirhan Sirhan and Charles Manson — Hilton will be segregated from the general population for her own safety, living in a one- or two-person cell. Her cell will be Spartan: 12-by-8 feet with a toilet, sink and a window 6 inches wide. She’ll comb her blonde locks in a mirror made of polished metal. Breakfast is served between 6 a.m. and 7:30 a.m., hours when Hilton sometimes gets in after a night of partying. Inmates in segregation are allowed outside their cells for at least an hour each day to shower, watch television in the day room, participate in outdoor recreation or talk on the telephone, Scott said. There are a bank of phones that use prepaid phone cards?cellular telephones and Blackberries aren’t allowed. There have been other celebrities at the women’s jail. Actress Daryl Hannah, arrested last year for failing to leave a 14-acre inner-city garden where farmers were being evicted, spent a few hours there. A year ago, former “Lost” actress Michelle Rodriguez showed up to serve a 60-day jail sentence for violating probation terms after her drunken driving arrest in Hawaii. She was released in hours because of overcrowding. Sometimes stars are allowed to do their time in a jail of their choosing. In such cases celebrities pay a daily room-and-board fee to the smaller jails, which afford them more privacy and comfort. Sean Penn found a jail in Bridgeport, a remote town on the eastern flank of the Sierra, to serve a 60-day sentence in 1987 for fighting with a photographer in violation of his probation for a barroom brawl. Cop-slapping actress Zsa Zsa Gabor served three days behind bars in 1990 at the El Segundo jail near the Los Angeles International Airport. She paid $85 a day. But the judge in Hilton’s case wouldn’t allow such an arrangement, so she’ll head to Lynwood on June 5. |

Google Purchases The Earth For Record $590.6 Billion - What the Hell??? Posted: 05 May 2007 10:56 PM GMT-06:00 I actually donot understand this news, can somebody please elaborate… |
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (CAP) – Search engine firm, Google has agreed in principle to acquire the planet Earth for a record $590.6 billion in cash and assets. The takeover tops Google’s recent deal for the web advertising network, Doubleclick for a paltry $3.1 billion. “With the completion of our Google Earth project, we have analyzed every square mile of this beautiful planet and are poised to take Google to a whole new level,” Google co-founder and president Sergey Brin said in a prepared statement. “The world at large will not be able to sneeze without Google knowing about it, and we believe that’s a good thing.” The acquisition marks the single largest purchase of a planet with inhabitants since such records were kept in 1922, and is expected to be finalized within two months. Reports have also surfaced that Microsoft is concerned over the purchase and that it is prompting regulators to probe into antitrust issues linked with the deal. “This proposed acquisition raises serious competition and privacy concerns in that it gives the Google-Earth combination unprecedented control over our lives,” said Brad Smith, Microsoft’s Senior Vice President and General Counsel. “And you know damn well Microsoft wants a piece of that pie. What the hell’s left for us? One of Saturn’s moons?” However, Google officials defended their company against the allegations, likening it to the analogy of the pot and the kettle. “Listen, don’t you guys have a virus to go patch or something?” quipped Brin. “Our employees are always saying how great it is to work for Google,” said Brin in sit-down interview with CAP News. “And now everyone will get a chance to see how great it is because all 6.5 trillion people on Earth are basically our employees now. Cool, huh?” Brin said Google’s goal is to “make the world better – less intrusive, more effective, and more useful.” He said the company is also working on a new filtering technology for the world and “is very close to turning this on.” He wouldn’t elaborate on just what content might be filtered, but did wink when CAP News mentioned the Middle East. In other news related to Google, it has also announced a long-term agreement with Christianity’s supreme being God, enabling Google to begin research for its much anticipated Google Heaven online imaging service. |

Shifty eyes may be a sign of good memory ! Posted: 05 May 2007 09:39 PM GMT-06:00 Moving your eyes from side to side for 30 seconds can boost your power of recall, researchers say. Horizontal eye wiggles are thought to cause the two hemispheres of the brain to interact more, improving the ability to retrieve memories. Scientists at Manchester Metropolitan University found people who made horizontal eye movements recognised significantly more previously studied words than subjects who did not make such eye movements. They also had fewer errors in their recall. |

Bollywood may put sex back in closet Posted: 05 May 2007 09:27 PM GMT-06:00 The Hindi film industry has come a long way from the days when a kiss between the male and female lead in a film was represented by two flowers meeting and intimacy was suggested by lights being switched off or a setting sun. But the box-office failure of films with above-average adult content coupled with a series of diktats against public and on-screen displays of intimacy may lead filmmakers to put sex back into the closet. A peck on Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty’s cheek by Hollywood star Richard Gere has somehow labelled them as offenders deserving court arrests. Likewise, internationally known star Aishwarya Rai has been summoned to explain an “obscene” kissing scene in Dhoom 2 in a Muzaffarpur court in Bihar on May 30. Her co-star Hrithik Roshan and the owners of a cinema, which screened the action flick, have also been summoned. Not too long ago an Israeli couple that married in India was fined $22 (Dh81) for indecency caused by their wedding embrace in a holy town. Priests were offended when the couple kissed and hugged during the chanting of religious verses. The apologetic couple said they were unaware public kissing is banned. A university in Pune also made news when it enacted a ban on kissing, hand holding or even cuddling on its campus. Back in the real world, upcoming actor Emraan Hashmi, who was once better known as “kissing king”, has decided he will quit smooching on-screen. Other Bollywood actors have also decided to give up steamy scenes in real life. The first one to join Emraan’s “non-kissing” league is newcomer Kiran Jhanjani, who requested his director to delete a long lip-locking scene with actress Malishka in forthcoming film Sitam. Another actor in the making, Arjun Punj, refused to give lip service to bombshell Mona Chopra in Time Pass. And it’s not only the male breed but female actresses too are ready to skip steamy scenes. While established actresses are known to object to steamy scenes or ask for a body double, even beginners like Maushami Udeshi are known to have said no to a real kiss. In fact, the proverbial sex bombs of Bollywood have sobered down even as some actresses from the top league have slipped into sexy bikinis. Neha Dhupia, Mallika Sherawat, Payal Rohatgi and Celina Jaitley are among those looking for “acting-oriented” roles only. Rakhi Sawant is still doing her jiggling and booty shaking. But then, who wants to see her anymore? Consider this. No skin flick has managed to put the cash registers on fire since 2005. Even films with heavy doses of cleavage and skin show are dodgy about sex. Actors in Hindi films look supremely uncomfortable doing intimate scenes. Some films play safe by showing only dark outlines of the couple in bed like Parinda, Freaky Chakra and Maqbool. “Our filmmakers were trying to incorporate sex scenes when actors don’t seem to be ready for them. Sure, we should change with the changing times. But wouldn’t it make better sense for filmmakers to make sure the actors are set to play the part convincingly rather than fumble through it,” said commentator Deepa Gehlot. |

Could Mercury be gooey inside? Posted: 05 May 2007 09:25 PM GMT-06:00 A molten core may make Mercury spin in its orbit like a raw egg, according to a study published online on Thursday in Science magazine. Scientists have long though that Mercury had a solid iron core which froze as the planet cooled off after it was formed billions of years ago. Researchers at Nasa and Cornell used the same trick chefs use to see if an egg is raw or hard-boiled to show that the planet closest to the sun is still gooey inside. Just as an egg spins differently when it’s been cooked, so too should solid planets. But Mercury showed tiny twists in its spin as it orbited the sun which were twice what would be expected in a completely solid body. These twists – or longitudinal librations – were explained by the fact that molten cores are not forced to rotate along with the shell. They occur as the force of the sun’s gravitational pull affects the planet’s slightly asymmetrical shape. To maintain a molten core for such a long time after the planet has cooled, the core must contain other elements besides iron, researchers said. That makes it likely that the core contains a lighter element such as sulfur which would lower its melting temperature. The presence of sulfur would also support the theory that elements both close and far away from the sun were involved in Mercury’s formation. Researchers measured the twists in Mercury’s spin by sending a powerful radar signal to the planet and picking up the signal’s echo at two telescopes that were about 2 000 miles (about 3 200km) apart. They were able to calculate the spin rate by measuring how long it took for a particular pattern to arrive at the two locations. Since Earth and Mercury are only in the necessary alignment for periods of 20 seconds at a time the 21 measurements had to be very carefully timed. More information about Mercury is expected to be gleaned when the Nasa spacecraft Messenger makes its first fly-by in 2008 before beginning to orbit the planet in 2011. “It is our hope that Messenger will address the remaining questions that we cannot address from the ground,” said lead author by Jean-Luc Margot, a professor of astronomy at Cornell University. |

IBM achieves chip breakthrough, again Posted: 05 May 2007 09:24 PM GMT-06:00 IBM has developed a way to make microchips run up to one-third faster or use 15 per cent less power by using an exotic material that “self-assembles” in a similar way to a seashell or snowflake. The computer services and technology company said the new process allows the wiring on a chip to be insulated with vacuum, replacing the glass-like substances used for decades but which have become less effective as chips steadily shrink. It is the latest achievement for IBM researchers, who have announced a number of advances in recent months allowing chips to get smaller despite challenges posed by physical laws at those tiny dimensions. “This is one of the biggest breakthroughs I’ve seen in the last decade,” said John Kelly, IBM’s senior vice president of technology. “The holy grail of insulators is to use vacuum … and we’ve broken the code on how to do this,” Kelly said. |

Government has power to ban books, newspapers: Apex Court Posted: 05 May 2007 09:17 PM GMT-06:00 The Supreme Court has ruled that the Government has the power to ban or forfeit any publication that endangers public order even if it means restricting the freedom of expression guaranteed by the Constitution. “It is true that forfeiture of a newspaper or book or a document is a serious encroachment on the right of a citizen, but if forfeiture is called for in the public interest it must without a doubt have pre-eminence over any individual interest,” a bench of Justices B P Singh and H S Bedi observed while upholding the Karnataka Government’s decision to ban a vernacular novel. |

Renaming VOB's and loading in Sony Vegas Posted: 05 May 2007 08:31 PM GMT-06:00 Cyberlink Powerencoder is supposed to be a file converter. I downloaded it to convert VOB files to MPG so that they can be used in Windows Movie Maker. This is the fourth converter I have tried. I tried Powerencoder on two different VOB files and both failed after a while, though there was an MPG file created of what it had managed to convert. I tried loading both of these files into WMM but both failed, probably because the conversion hadn’t finished properly and therefore the MPG file hadn’t written some form of trailer record….. |

Scared of RSS? Check this out... Posted: 07 May 2007 01:09 AM CDT The confusion over what RSS actually stands for – some say ‘Rich Site Summary’, others say ‘RDF Site Summary’, the favourite is ‘Really Simple Syndication’ – is symptomatic of a technology that has only just emerged. Until recently this lack of maturity – involving differing standards and low levels of integration – was a deterrent to its adoption by large corporations. But recent announcements show this is changing fast. Industry heavyweights, both on the web tools and content sides, are now incorporating RSS into their mainstream offerings. News leaked out last month that Microsoft’s Internet Explorer version 7.0 will include a built-in RSS reader. Other browsers – Mozilla’s Firefox and Opera – already offer RSS as a standard feature. Microsoft had moved decisively towards adoption of RSS when, in mid-March, it began testing a Web-based RSS aggregator incorporated within MSN. This came hard on the heals of its decision to add RSS aggregation within My MSN personal home page (fed by Moreover Technologies). Yahoo and Ask Jeeves are already incorporating RSS features within their services.

Alistair Pereira trial judge puts in papers Posted: 07 May 2007 01:03 AM CDT The judge of the trial court who sentenced Bandra resident Alistair Pereira to six months’ imprisonment, for mowing down seven pavement dwellers last year, has put in his papers following remarks by the Bombay high court over lop-sided investigations and prosecution. Additional sessions judge Ajit Mishra sent his resignation letter in a sealed cover to the Bombay High Court (HC) after the division bench of Chief Justice Swatanter Kumar and Justice SC Dharmadhikari took suo motu cognisance of the case on April 19. Although, the judge has not assigned any reason for resigning from the post, high court sources said that the resignation might have been prompted by certain queries raised by the bench. The high court bench, while taking up the case suo motu and hearing the state’s appeal seeking enhancement of punishment had asked: ‘Why this court should not examine and satisfy itself as to the correctness, legality or propriety of the findings, sentence and other orders passed during the trial of the above case’? Indicting the investigating and prosecuting agency for the glaring loopholes left during the course of trial at the sessions court, Chief Justice Swatanter Kumar had stated: ‘There can’t be a greater slur on the system’. ‘In the facts and circumstances of the present case, what directions the court ought to pass in the present proceedings to prevent the miscarriage of justice if any’ — further noted the bench. On May 3, the bench also wondered how, when fined Rs 5 lakh, Pereira managed to deposit the amount within five minutes of his conviction. “Did he know in advance?” the court had asked. According to the case details, Pereira had been convicted for six months and ordered to pay a fine of Rs 5 lakh after he was found guilty under section 304 of IPC which amounts to death due to negligence not amounting to culpable homicide and 337 of IPC. Interestingly, the trial was completed in a span of six days. Judge Mishra, while pronouncing the judgement, had severely criticised the police for its ‘casual approach to the investigations’. The trial court had also pulled up the investigating officer and said, ‘They do not seem to know how to investigate matters or produce evidence before the court’. |

No sex education in CBSE curriculum: Arjun Singh Posted: 07 May 2007 01:01 AM CDT There is no proposal to include sex education in the curriculum of the Central Board of Secondary Education, Rajya Sabha was informed on Monday. In a written reply, Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh said the government had, however, launched an Adolescence Education Programme for secondary and higher secondary classes. The AEP is collaboration between the HRD ministry and the National AIDS Control Organisation, he said, adding that its objective is to empower the adolescent population to make informed choices and develop life skills for addressing psychological, social and health concerns. The AEP is aimed at making learners aware of major concerns like HIV/AIDS and drug (substance) abuse, he said. On minority education, the minister said that a national sample study to track students’ attendance at primary and upper primary levels in 20 major states and Delhi had been commissioned by the government. He said reports from nine states received so far show that attendance rate of Muslim children at primary and upper primary levels of schools are close to the overall attendance rate of all students. |

Modi govt releases video, claims Sheikh was terrorist Posted: 07 May 2007 12:49 AM CDT New Delhi: The Sohrabuddin Sheikh encounter case is fast taking a political colour with Gujarat headed for elections later this year. On the defensive, the Narendra Modi government received a shot in the arm after the BJP released a video of Sohrabuddin Sheikh in Bhopal and Gandhinagar, claiming he was indeed a terrorist. The video shows Sohrabuddin’s body being brought by a group of people shouting anti-India slogans. The Gujarat government is to file a status report on May 14 before the Supreme Court on the investigations in the case. On Monday morning, proceedings in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha were disrupted after the Congress and other parties such as the Samajwadi Party demanded Narendra Modi’s resignation over the issue. They have accused his government of shielding policemen. “The Modi government is doing very well on all fronts. If there is a fake encounter case, the government will certainly take action,” said BJP leader, Ravi Shankar Prasad. Both houses have been adjourned till 1400 hrs IST. Minister of State for Home, Sri Prakash Jaiswal has demanded a CBI inquiry into the Gujarat Fake Encounter case. “There should be a CBI inquiry into the Gujarat fake encounter. Since there are so many accusations leveled against the state government, a CBI inquiry is the best way to get to the truth,” he said. However, Gujarat BJP President, Purushottam Rupala responded to this by saying: “By raising this issue, the Congress is trying to gain political mileage, but let me tell you, they will pay a heavy price. Remember, this is election year in Gujarat and Congress should realise that it cannot come to power in Gandhinagar via Sohrabuddin.” “We will gve a fitting reply to this. Congress is used to making all such demands, but why do they not understand, that they are actually boosting the morale of mafia and criminals,” Rupala added. Meanwhile, the digging work by CID and forensic experts has ended in Illol, near Ahmedabad, where Kauser Bi was allegedly burnt by the policemen. The Gujarat Police had arrested three IPS officials on a charge of murder for their alleged role in the death of Sohrabuddin Sheikh on November 22, 2005. The police had arrested former director of the Gujarat anti-terrorism squad, D G Vanjara, SP of the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), Rajkumar Pandyan and an officer from the Rajasthan ATS, Dinesh Kumar. The three had claimed that Sheikh was a Lashkar-e-Toiba operative on a mission to kill Narendra Modi. Sohrabuddin Sheikh’s wife, Kauser Bi was also with him at the time of the encounter and was also killed by the policemen. Her body was later burnt and disposed off. Sohrabuddin was traveling with his wife from Hyderabad to Sangli in an inter-state bus in Maharashtra, when the Gujarat ATS and the Rajasthan STF picked them along with a third man – Tulsiram Prajapati. Tulsiram Prajapati, too, was killed by the police in a fake encounter. Following a CID probe, the Gujarat government admitted in court that is was a fake encounter. Meanwhile, evidence has emerged that the powerful marble lobby in Rajasthan had paid off Gujarat anti-terrorism squad’s D G Vanjara to dispose of Sheikh, who was allegedly extorting money from marble traders. Kauser Bi was killed simply because she was a witness to Sheikh’s fake encoun |

Dhoni kissed publicly by a female fan Posted: 07 May 2007 12:08 AM CDT Indian cricketer MS Dhoni was on Sunday hugged and kissed publicly by a frenzied female fan in the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on the last day of the five-days conditioning camp ahead of the Bangladesh tour. With the Shilpa Shetty-Richard Gere kissing controversy still afresh, it was time for some more grit to the kissing mill as the stylish cricketer was grabbed and kissed by a young woman after she broke the security cordon and took all by surprise with her action. Haseena Nasreeb Shiuli of Berhampore in Murshidabad along with her friend Sweety had been almost camping in Eden Gardens since May 2 to cheer the Indian players. Shiuli, a die-hard Dhoni fan and a first year student of Berhampore College, hugged and kissed Dhoni as he came down from the team bus to oblige for an autograph. The team was leaving by the bus after the morning practice session. She had been cheering for Dhoni with a poster emblazoned “I love you” for the past few days. The girl broke into tears and went hysteric screaming “Dhoni”, “Dhoni” as she was whisked away by the security men. “I had come to see only Dhoni from Berhampore (about 250 km from Kolkata),” she said breaking down in tears. “It is the most memorable day of my life. Dhoni advised me to go away because of the cops and said he is there for me,” Shiuli said as she kept waving at the team bus. Bollywood actor Shilpa Shetty had recently angered Hindu radicals when Hollywood star Richard Gere kissed her publicly at a function on AIDS awareness on April 15 in Delhi. |

Pilot curses his own passengers Posted: 08 May 2007 04:57 AM CDT Northwest Airlines canceled a flight with 180 passengers aboard after the pilot began cursing at passengers while the plane was being prepared for takeoff in Las Vegas on Friday, airline officials and witnesses said. The cancellation disrupted Easter travel plans for many of the passengers. From the moment the captain stepped aboard Flight 1190 to Detroit, passengers reported hearing him use “animated” language while talking on his cell phone, Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor told CNN. “He was having a fit, swearing up a storm,” a passenger on the flight said. “He was saying ‘F this’ and ‘F that.’” When confronted about it by passengers, the pilot became “obscene” and began cursing at the customers, she said. “He made a big disturbance.” The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police and the local FAA flight standards office were notified, Gregor said. Police arrived on the scene, pulled the pilot aside and interviewed him. He was not administered a field sobriety test. CNN was unable to immediately contact the police officers involved. The FAA officials called Northwest Airlines headquarters. The airline decided to remove the pilot from the aircraft and fly him to Detroit for further questioning. Northwest Airlines then canceled the flight, apologized for the delay and offered hotel accommodations and penalty-free re-booking on the next available flight out of Las Vegas, a spokesman for the airline said. The airline said “a review of the matter” was being conducted and the decision to cancel the flight was made “due to reports of inappropriate language by a crew member.” Mike Fergus, an FAA spokesman, said the FAA’s flight standards investigation unit was looking into the incident. According to Fergus, the FAA has the authority to send a “letter of admonition” to the pilot or, in the most extreme cases, revoke a pilot’s FAA certificate, which would ground the pilot. “I had to call and cancel two family dinners and we’re stuck here an extra night,” a passenger said. “We’ve been at the airport for six hours waiting — it’s chaos. It’s Easter weekend…we want to be home.” |

Men's worst fashion mistakes at work Posted: 08 May 2007 04:54 AM CDT Dude, have you taken a good look at yourself lately? Your fashion-sense or lack there-of could be offending the eyes of your colleagues and recklessly endangering your career! Here are 10 of the most common fashion crimes along with tips on how to avoid them: 1. Backpacks. OK, maybe this is just a misdemeanor, but you’re trying to climb the corporate ladder, not hike up a mountain. Carry a briefcase or messenger bag—and if you need something for your gym clothes—invest in a nice-looking gym bag. 2. Clashing or too many colors. A coat of many colors may have worked for Joseph, but you, my friend, should limit each outfit to just three colors or shades. Stick to complementary colors (those opposite from each other on the color wheel) or colors from the same pallet. Match pale clothes with light-colored shoes and dark clothes with dark shoes. 3. Stained clothes. Don’t be that guy who’s unwittingly walking around with red sauce on his shirt. Make it part of your daily routine to inspect your clothes when you take them off and when they come out of the wash to make sure you don’t miss a spot. Watch for yellow circles under the armpits, soiled collars or cuffs. You may even want to keep a stain stick in your desk at work. 4. Ill-fitting pants. Even if you’re sure of your size, always try on pants before buying them, because different brands have different lengths. Jeans can be worn to the bottom of your heel, but your khakis or dress pants should end at the top of the heel. Make sure they don’t reveal any sock as you walk— or more than a couple of inches of sock when you sit. Too tight or too baggy won’t cut it either. 5. Ponytails. You’re neither a wizard nor a rock star. And even if you were, admit it, doesn’t Michael Bolton look much better now that he’s cut his hair? If you must keep your hair long, make sure it’s neat and clean and doesn’t fall past the base of your neck. |

Porn, not viagra, is good for pandas Posted: 08 May 2007 04:52 AM CDT Wolong (China): They’re cute, playful, cuddly but apparently not so passionate. So, researchers in China have found a way to get male pandas to put down their bamboo, get out of their trees and get in the mood. “We video tape pandas who mate successfully and play that for pandas who don’t know how to do it,” said Zhang Hemin from Wolong Panda Reserve. Yes, that’s panda porn. The theory is simple: show pandas how it’s done so they can make the most of the three days every year when females are ready to mate. And it is not just the visuals but also the sounds of panda loving that does the job. Scientists at China’s Wolong Research Center have found what’s good on tape, is even better live: taking pandas who may be a little shy, to watch others who are not. Handlers also regularly swap panda partner so each panda finds that some one special. All these measures have led to a baby panda boom and 20 cubs were born here last year, which is more than ever before. The park’s Director, Jung Hemin, boasts his breeding program now has almost a 100 per cent success rate. But not everything has worked. They tried viagra once but it proved just too much for your average bear. “They stayed excited for way too long,” said Zhang Hemin. Even so, after teetering on the edge of extinction, the future for the giant panda is looking hopeful, and frisky. |

World’s largest pearl on auction Posted: 08 May 2007 04:37 AM CDT New Delhi: World’s largest pearl—passed down for 800 years, from Chinese emperors to Marco Polo is now up for auction at Abu Dhabi’s Emirates Palace and on the Internet, where it is estimated to fetch over $8 million. Interestingly, the person who owned the world’s largest natural pearl prior to the auction chooses to keep his name under wraps. Hundreds of curious onlookers and perspective buyers are waiting to get a glimpse of the ‘Arco Valley Pearl’ that measures 3.1 inches in length. The 575-carat pearl from 12th century Mongolia once belonged to Chinese emperors, Persian kings, the grandson of Genghis Khan and Marco Polo, states The Associated Press. ‘‘It’s 800 years old and it still takes your breath away,’‘ Khaled al-Sayegh, 35, a jeweler was quoted by AP. There is another ‘mammoth’ pearl that measures 9.45-inches and is called the Pearl of Allah. A diver off the Philippine island of Palawan discovered it in 1934. However, lies at a museum in the country and is not meant for sale. The Arco Valley pearl, named after a previous owner from Austria’s Arco Valley family dynasty, is white with a touch of blue, mixed with pink and cream colors on its sides. It has been drilled three times: to fit among the jewels of an unknown woman’s tiara, to go with a ceremonial mandarin suit and to fit a crown or turban decorated with precious stones belonging to a Persian king, said The Associated Press. At least 400 people from the Emirates, Gulf countries, China, India, Britain, the U.S. and Tahiti are expected to attend the auction. |

How are EDS & Accenture going to deal with Agile development and Scrum Posted: 08 May 2007 03:47 AM CDT Now that I’m starting to appreciate agile, and before I do a massive editing session on my CV to reflect all of those agile projects I worked on but didn’t realise it, I’ve started to wonder how those wonderful institutions EDS and Accenture are going to be affected by it. Firstly EDS. Not sure how it’s going to affect this shower as they still develop software like it’s the 1980’s anyway. They probably do some waterfall with their development. Can’t see them doing any Prince 2 though. I’d imagine if you mentioned the word agile to EDS, you’d get some very blank looks. All EDS has to do is read some some agile documentation, amend some mission statement docs and they’re set…... |

Posted: 08 May 2007 03:30 AM CDT No, Windows is not a virus. Here’s what viruses do: 1.They replicate quickly – okay, Windows does that. 2.Viruses use up valuable system resources, slowing down the system as they do so – okay, Windows does that. 3.Viruses will, from time to time, trash your hard disk – okay, Windows does that too. 4.Viruses are usually carried, unknown to the user, along with valuable programs and systems. – Sigh.. Windows does that, too. 5.Viruses will occasionally make the user suspect their system is too slow (see 2) and the user will buy new hardware. – Yup, Windows does that, too. Until now it seems Windows is a virus but there are fundamental differences: Viruses are well supported by their authors, are running on most systems, their program code is fast, compact and efficient and they tend to become more sophisticated as they mature. So Windows is not a virus. It’s a bug |

IT development in China, everybodies going there Posted: 08 May 2007 03:26 AM CDT I’ve started reading a book on the phenomenal growth of IT in China and India*. I’m a bit of a sucker for these kind of books so as soon as I saw it I had to buy it, if for no other reason than to scare the bejesus out of myself. Seems that everybodies moving to these countries. One of the obvious reasons is that development costs are cheaper. Having said that even within these countries development costs vary so much so that one Western IT company actually upped sticks in one part of China and moved to another even cheaper area of China. Apparently competition in these countries is fierce and each city, town or IT development area wastes no time in criticising the next bunch down the road (Sounds like they have a reasonable understanding of capitalism then. Ed). |
