| Visually impaired persons attending training programmes had staged a protest on Thursday |
Bangalore: The National Association for the Blind, Karnataka Branch (NAB-KB), has suspended activities for 10 days following an agitation by visually impaired trainees on Thursday demanding immediate job placements and redress of grievances.
A meeting of the trainees and representatives of the NAB-KB management was held here on Friday to resolve issues. Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities L. Krishnamurthy attended the meeting. Speaking to The Hindu , Mr. Krishnamurthy said most of the trainees who had staged the agitation had attended self-employment training programmes. Once they had completed training, the association could do little to make them economically independent. However, he said, he would write to the Director of Industries and Commerce to arrange for loans to enable them to start their own ventures.
Mr. Krishnamurthy said the students' allegation about irregularities in job placements by the placement officer of the association would be looked into. "I have asked them (NAB-KB) to provide details regarding placements in the past three years," he said.
Regarding complaints about harassment of women employees, Mr. Krishnamurthy said the students had not made a specific complaint. "Therefore, I am not able to take action," he said. He described the other demands of the students as vague and said the association was not bound by law to fulfil them.
Trainees said they had "nowhere to go". "How can they lock up the place and leave us in the lurch. What will happen to our training," asked one of them.
