Minasan,
konbanha. :-)

I hope your exams and essays etc are going smoothly. Here are some
things (lots of things) you can get engaged in over the summer
holidays (or from now for those who have already finished).

Also, there are students who need people to complete questionnaires
for their final theses, so although it's exam time please help them
out if you can. The more people that can help out the better!

ask you for your idea on the topic. The answers of this questionnaire
will contribute to the research. This questionnaire is also anonymous.
So please answer simply and send your questionnaire back to
yumi...@hotmail.com. I know all of you are busy for work, essay and
so on. I appreciate your kindness if you could do me a favor.

SHIMOTSUKE JAPANESE PAPER DOLL EXHIBITION ARTIST - MASUMI JACKSON

The Shimotsuke (Tochigi prefecture) paper doll differs to others
because as it has no facial features, it is up to each individual to
use their imagination and fill in the gaps. The development of these
dolls stemmed from Heian Period (approx. 1000 years ago) where dolls
were a means of warding off grief and bringing happiness. Although it
is not known exactly when the Shimotsuke technique was first
developed, it is thought that they have been in existence for hundreds
of years. The paper itself is constructed using a "squeezing process"
and as the name Shimotsuke suggests, is said to squeeze all evil from
the body. People who were sick or in grief would gather at a river and
throw the dolls into the river along with their troubles.

Come see and learn more about this marvellous exhibition of
approximately 74 exquisite dolls.

Nihonga Collection Exhibition

The origin of Nihonga can be traced back a thousand years ago although
the name only came about in the Meiji era (1868-1912) to distinguish
it from other art forms. Nihonga is traditional Japanese painting
using watercolor paints derived from rock pigment on hand-made washi
paper. The pigments come from natural minerals, shells, corals, and
even semi-precious stones like garnets and pearls. Experience some of
the finest examples of traditional Japanese painting to be seen in
Australia.
