O-Week Update

Mina-san, konnichi wa!

Welcome back! This semester the Japanese Club has many more fun and exciting events planned for you all such as: a Japanese bowling night, Karaoke night, Huge Nomikai, Yakiniku dinner night and much more!! So join the club and make the most of your free-time at uni!

Finally, thank-you very much for your support over the past year and we hope to see you again at our events this year. This will be the last email for those who do not wish to rejoin the club.

All club memberships have now expired!
You may renew your club membership during the following times:
  • Thursday 28th February, 12pm - 4pm at Union Lawn
  • Friday 29th February, 12pm - 4pm at Union Lawn
  • Tuesday 4th March, 12pm - 3pm at North Court
Alternatively, you may complete a membership form at Level 2 Reception, Sidney Myer Asia Centre. Yearly membership costs $3 for non-student union members and $1 for members. We strongly encourage you to join the Student Union in order to keep our club alive. Check out http://www.union.unimelb.edu.au/ for more information. Be sure to write our Source code in the 'Office Only' section of the student union application form. The source code can be collected from our club stall and shall hopefully be published on our website after Thursday.

Japanese Tea Ceremony
Join us in the Japanese Room, Architecture building where our tea master, Mr. Sasaki, will be conducting a traditional tea ceremony! This is your chance to learn how to participate in a Japanese tea ceremony and experience a very important aspect of Japanese culture. Weekly Conversation Sessions
Join us in Alice Hoy 225 to practice speaking Japanese/English in a friendly and casual environment while enjoying some tasty snacks from Japan! Anyone with an interest in Japanese language and culture is welcome to attend!

Weekly J-Drama Sessions
Come along, relax and watch real Japanese TV with English subtitles on two projection screens! This is your chance to make new friends and further improve on your listening comprehension skills while watching Japanese drama. Japanese snacks will be provided! As the show we will be watching has not yet been decided, please send your suggestions to pres...@mujc.org.au.

Japanese Calligraphy Demonstration
Calligraphy is one of the most important arts in Japanese culture. Shiro Aoyagi is head of the Hokuriku Calligraphy Academy and an acclaimed modern artist in Japan. He has performed calligraphy demonstrations and exhibited around the world over a career spanning 50 years. Hosted by Sumido is now coming to Melbourne for the first time to perform in the traditional style.

Hokuriku Calligraphy Exhibition
Accompanying the demonstration at NGV will be an exhibition of around 100 selected works of Mr Aoyagi and senior artists from his school, the Hokuriku Calligraphy Academy. This exhibition represents the pinnacle of skill in the art of Japanese calligraphy.

Kana Ohashi performance
After making her debut in 2007 at Melba Hall, it has been said 14 year old Violist Kana Ohashi has the timbre of one in a million violinists, and an incredible understanding of repertoire and instrument. She will be accompanied by pianist Amir Farid in this one off performance as part of Melba Festival. Enjoy classical music in the majestic vines of the Yarra Valley.
