One of the folders inside my ' iPod Photos' folder is called 'iPod
Photo Cache'. Inside that is a series of folders labelled 'F00', 'F01',
'F02' and so on. Inside each of those again is one or or more folders
labelled something like 'T149.ithmb', 'T200.ithmb', '639.ithmb', etc.
These are thumbnail images related somehow to photos that are actually
on the iPod, but they're arranged in no discernably logical order.
Photoshop, iPhoto and Preview can't open them, but Graphic Converter
can, and it reports the size of each to be 720 by 480 pixels.
I don't understand why they're there at all, and in any case why
they're so big. Every photo I put on the iPod is first Photoshopped
down to the iPod's maximum display size of 320 by 240 pixels. Why would
thumbnails of them be bigger than that? And what are they doing there
anyway? As I understand it, the purpose of thumbnails is to provide a
space-saving mini-catalogue of a bunch of larger files. What's the use
of thumbnails larger than the originals and stored in the same place?
I'm wondering if it's safe just to trash the lot.

You go first.

Not to dissuade people from posting here, but the discussion forums at
APPLE.com might provide an answer to that kind of query.
