Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) Minimum Requirements

According to a forum post on Amazon.com, the minimum requirements for
the developer's seed of the upcoming Leopard release of OS X lists
the following:
an Intel processor or a PowerPC G4 or G5 processor
a DVD drive
built-in FireWire
at least 256 MB of RAM for a PowerPC based Mac, and 512 MB for an
Intel-based Mac
a built-in display or a display connected to an Apple-supplied video
card supported by your computer [The Installer may not support your
video card.]
at least 6 GB of disk space available, or 8 GB if you install the
developer tools

Above is what I found by simply typing "Mac O/S 10.5 Requirements",
therefore it should work.

Thanks I just tried the same and the Apple site is suggesting a 867Mhz
processor=20
Would my lack of 67Mhz make that much of a difference

That WAS for the "Developers Seed", which was one of the early-on betas.

The final shipping version of Leopard required a minimum 867 mhz G4,
and the only way you are going to get Leopard on an 800 mhz iMac G4
is through one of the "workarounds" available online, such as here:
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=392106
or here:
http://forums.macnn.com/90/mac-os-x/351987/leopard-on-800mhz-g4-imac/

Above is what I found by simply Googling "leopard install 800mhz g4".

You don't say how much RAM / hard drive space you have Chris. That
will most definitely be a factor to consider. And also, if upgrading
to Leopard is really worth it to you.

I have thought of installing it on a 800 iMac G4 by putting the install disk in my MacBook Pro and booting the iMac in Target mode then installing the operating system on the iMac as an external firewire drive.

After doing some reading I now know why my first attempt did not work, I would need to install it using a G4 or G5 otherwise the OS will be installed thinking a Intel processor is being used.

You can use Leopard Assist to fake out the open firmware on your G4. This will allow you to install Leopard on a <867MHz G4 from the DVD.
http://leopardassist.sourceforge.net/

There is a reason why Apple set the minimum requirements so high, Leopard is a resource hog. I suggest using CCC to make an image of your system before upgrading to Leopard. Then I would install Leopard and see if the results are acceptable. You can always use CCC to restore the image of your old system if it doesn't work out the way you wanted it to.

I tried it on the iMac 800 G4 (OS 10.4.11) but no joy, the computer would get stuck at the gray Apple logo during boot up.

Too bad, not all the iMac G4s are supported with Leopard Assist as per their web site. Here are some other articles which describe how to install Leopard on a < 876MHz system. I've never tried any of these myself and you should be familiar with the command line so good luck. Please back up any important data before doing any of this, I can't stress that enough.

Faking Out the Leopard Installer with Open Firmware: http://lowendmac.com/osx/leopard/openfirmware.htmlhttp://pareis.wordpress.com/2007/11/13/using-open-firmware-to-install-leopard-below-867-mhz/

Here's a little Applescript program that does all the work for you. http://pareis.wordpress.com/2008/07/05/leos-little-helper-script-to-install-leopard-below-867-mhz/

Let me know if any of this works out for you.

It has a brand new hard-drive, 160 gb, so I thought this would be the
time to do it. The only thing I have done to the machine since the
hard-drive update is set up Mail, synced the address book, calendar
and bookmarks. I think running Leopard should be fast enough on the
machine as I already have it satisfactorily installed on a 12"
Powerbook which has the minimum 867 clock speed.
