Old chargers don't work with the iPhone 3G because it no longer
supports charging via the Firewire pins (pin 19 and 30 on the dock
connector), and can only be charged via USB (pins 16, 23, 25, and
27). Virtually all car chargers charge via 12v firewire, except of
course the ones with a built-in usb port. This is because the car's
electrical system is already at 12v, so its cheaper to manufacture
firewire-based chargers, instead of using voltage regulators to
charge via USB (5v).
Currently, the only way to charge an iPhone 3G is through a charger
that uses the USB pins, which unfortunately can only be found on a
computer, wall charger, or some audio docks. Currently there is no
"fix" (aside from tearing the cable apart and soldering an in-line
voltage regulator), but apparently apple is coming out with some sort
of adapter, because it looks like all iPod car chargers have this
problem.

Also, here is an FM Transmitter that SUPPOSEDLY works with the iPhone:
http://www.monstercable.com/productdisplay.asp?pin=4692
As well, a slightly cheaper one that works, but with the iPhone
switched to Airplane Mode:

http://www.monstercable.com/productdisplay.asp?pin=3029
"The following product will work with the iPhone, but with limited
functionality, will only charge the iPhone. When the transmitter is
connected, the iPhone will display a dialog box, that asks: would you
like to turn on the Airline mode? Select Yes to assume functionality
of the transmitter."
