The magic happens when the hologram is illuminated by a laser beam. Whatever was hologrammed reappears in real 3D, floating in space. A hologram shows much, much more than even the latest 3D television.

Angiosperm holoparasites typically develop a haustorium in lieu of a root system, which attaches the parasite directly to its host for water and nutrient uptake (Kuijt, 1977). Although a primary haustorium facilitates the initial attachment to and invasion of the host during seed germination, this structure does not persist in endophytic parasites (Kuijt, 1969; Heide-Jørgensen, 2008). Instead, in these species the seedling epicotyl dies soon after germination, while the endophyte continues to spread invasively and intrusively through the host, eventually losing contact with the initial site of penetration (Kuijt, 1969). Although the endophyte absorbs nutrients from the host, the endophyte is not a haustorium because it does not connect an external shoot to the host (Heide-Jørgensen, 2008). The endophyte is very cryptic and typically cannot be discerned macroscopically. The most conspicuous part of the parasite is the floral shoot. It emerges from the host and is connected to the host vasculature via a chimeric structure, which is partly produced by the host as a wound response caused by the burst of the parasite buds, and partly by the parasite itself (Fig. 1). This chimeric structure is sometimes referred to as the cupule (Kuijt, 1969, 1977), and it serves to support the robust floral shoot at its base.

Recent phylogenetic analyses have shown that the four families in the former Rafflesiales are distantly related (Nickrent et al., 2004; Barkman et al., 2007). Rafflesiaceae s.s., which are the focus of our study, are placed in the rosid order Malpighiales (Barkman et al., 2004; Davis and Wurdack, 2004); Cytinaceae, in Malvales (Nickrent et al., 2004); Mitrastemonaceae, in Ericales (Barkman et al., 2004; Nickrent et al., 2004); and Apodanthaceae, in Cucurbitales (Filipowicz and Renner, 2010). An alternative placement of Apodanthaceae in Malvales has also been hypothesized based on morphology (Blarer et al., 2004). Thus, the endophytic habit has evolved independently several times in angiosperms (Barkman et al., 2004; Nickrent et al., 2004).

Development of Rafflesiaceae. All, except (A), depict Rhizanthes lowii. (A) Section of a seed of Rafflesia patma, showing a young sporophyte (proembryo) composed of two tiers of cells above a single cell (modified from Ernst and Schmid, 1913). (B) Tetrastigma host root external appearance and transverse section with a uniseriate filament, the predominant vegetative form. (C) Initiation of protocorm formation by periclinal divisions to give rise to a multiseriate filament. (D) The protocorm is transformed into a cormus by the separation of a sheet of tissue (dotted yellow line) at the front of the growing tear-shaped body. (E) Young floral shoot emerging from the host with completely differentiated floral organs. (F) Anthetic plant. Scale bars: B, C (100 μm); D (500 μm).

Crisis Point: The Rise of Vindicta was a holo-novel program designed like a blockbuster movie. The original program, Boimler Seven, was designed by Ensign Brad Boimler to help him prepare for a diplomacy workshop interview with Captain Carol Freeman. However, Ensign Beckett Mariner took control of the program and rewrote it.

Initially, the program was designed as a near-perfect representation of the USS Cerritos, and its holographic crewmembers were virtually identical to their flesh-and-blood counterparts (with the exception of Boimler, as he had no need for a hologram of himself in his own program). This was due to the fact that Boimler had used over seven years worth of the crew's personal logs to create them - an act that Ensign Sam Rutherford thought to be unethical, as some of those might have been private. Realizing how lifelike the holo-crew was, Mariner, still hurting from Captain Freeman sending her to the ship's therapist instead of the brig due to her brazen insubordination in violating the Prime Directive, overwrote the program to make it a movie-like program so she could direct her anger at the crew. While she was able to convince fellow ensigns D'Vana Tendi and Rutherford into joining her, Boimler instead tried to use the program the way he had intended. (LD: "Crisis Point")

In 2381, Brad Boimler wrote a sequel to The Rise of Vindicta entitled Crisis Point II: Paradoxus. This holoprogram featured the crew of the USS Wayfarer joining forces with the Cerritos to thwart a Romulan ploy to kill the family lineage of Ambassador Koro, and a journey in search of a being known as Ki-ty-ha. 1. Drugs such as phenobarbitone and phenylbutazone, which increase the concentration of microsomal haem and cytochrome P-450, also increase the saturation of rat liver apo-(tryptophan pyrrolase) with its haem activator, as does the haem precursor 5-aminolaevulinate. 2. At 4h after the administration of the porphyrogens 2-allyl-2-isopropylacetamide, 3,5-diethoxycarbonyl-1,4-dihydrocollidine and griseofulvin, the total pyrrolase activity is increased whereas the haem saturation of the apoenzyme is decreased. This decreased saturation is prevented by pretreatment of the animals with the inhibitor of drug-metabolizing enzymes, SKF 525-A. 3. Pretreatment of rats with the above porphyrogens inhibits the rise in holo-(tryptophan pyrrolase) activity produced by subsequent administration of cortisol, tryptophan and 5-aminolaevulinate with two single exceptions, the possible reasons for which are discussed. 4. At 24h after the administration, in starved rats, of a single daily injection of the above porphyrogens for 1 or 2 days, the holoenzyme activity is significantly increased. 5. It is suggested that the saturation of rat liver apo-(tryptophan pyrrolase) with its haem activator can be modified by treatment known to cause destruction, inhibition of synthesis, increased utilization and enhanced synthesis of liver haem. The possible involvement of the latter phenomenon in the aetiology of mental disorders in some patients with porphyria is discussed.

Halo Rise comes complete with a smart alarm built to lift you out of sleep at the ideal time for waking up and a wake-up light. The LED light can simulate the subtle darkening or brightening of the sun to ease users to bed and help them rise feeling refreshed. Halo Rise also includes sleep and environmental sensors that give customers insights into their sleep quality, helping them deduce actions like lowering the room temperature, drawing the shades, or reducing light levels to improve sleep.

Riders will pass under a Resistance gun turret and wind through ancient caverns that lead to tunnels dug by Resistance troops using laser-cutting tools. The caverns and tunnels are filled with Resistance armories and holo-screens bristling with digital battle plans.

Dejarik, also known as holochess,[2] was a popular two-player game in which teams of holographic creatures battled each other on a holochess table. A variant of the more ancient Shah-tezh, dejarik was commonly played on starships and in homes throughout the galaxy from well before the time of the Clone Wars and long through the reign of the Galactic Empire.

There existed a number of pieces from which the players could choose their four monsters, all of which were full-color holographic projections of creatures both real and mythological from across the galaxy.[5] Available pieces included the Ghhhk, Grimtaash the Molator, the Houjix, the Kintan strider, the K'lor'slug, the Mantellian Savrip, the Monnok, the Ng'ok,[6] the Bulbous, the Scrimp,[7] and the karkath.[8]

Each holomonster had specific Attack, Health, Range, and Movement ratings. A piece's Attack (ATK) rating represented the damage it could deal when attacking; its Health (HP) rating represented the amount of damage it could sustain before being removed from the board; its Range (RNG) rating indicated how far away it could attack; finally, its Movement rating (MOV) represented the number of spaces it could cover in one single move. Some creatures also had "special abilities."[3]

Since the conclusion of the war the Republic has been dealing with a sharp rise in piracy across its sectors, especially sectors within the Outer Rim Territories. With a severe economic depression, a downsized navy and military aswell as cut-backs across a number of regional police and security forces, the galaxies black market has thrived, as have smugglers and pirates throughout Republic space.
While the Senate is expected to meet shortly to discuss a means to curb this steady rise in piracy those from the Mid Rim and beyond wish all too well for a swift and sudden end to these steadily increasing illegal actions that are not only disrupting trade and commerce across the outer sectors of the Republic but communications also.
The seeming inaction of the Senate has caused a number of Outer-Rim worlds in recent months to begin to question whether or not to follow the Empire and Hapan examples and secede from the Republic, a government they are apparently beginning to see as no longer being able to take care of its own.

Pure elegance, Penthouse is a deep and rich blackened-purple with a mesmerizing sparkle! With a base hue reminiscent of the city sky from a high-rise view, Penthouse comes to life in direct light as various sizes of holographic flakes make an appearance to form a breathtaking borderline-black full of depth.

Many bacteria in nature are auxotrophic: they lack functional biosynthetic pathways to synthesize organic compounds that are essential for growth1. Amino acid auxotrophy is among the most common form of auxotrophies2,3. Bacteria that lost the capacity to synthesize certain essential amino acids depend on their environment (e.g., other bacterial species or their eukaryotic host) to obtain the missing compounds. Auxotrophy is expected to evolve when amino acids are abundant in the environment and can readily be taken up. Biosynthetic pathways can either be lost through selection against the futile costs of expressing these pathways or through the accumulation of neutral mutations that gradually deteriorate them4,5. Since auxotrophies can give rise to ecological dependencies, where one bacterium relies on another for growth, they are proposed to strongly shape the interactions between cells inside bacterial communities6. Indeed, multiple studies have shown how syntrophic cross-feeding interactions, based on the reciprocal exchange of amino acids, lead to stable coexistence2,7. Auxotrophies are therefore likely to play a prominent role in determining the composition and stability of microbial communities8,9,10.
