Driver Reviver Australia is a national volunteer-led program which operates at more than 180 sites across Australia. While Transport and Main Roads will no longer manage driver reviver sites, Driver Reviver Australia will continue to operate all other sites across Queensland.

Unfortunately, much of our owned driver reviver infrastructure across the state is not safe, and the cost of repairs and ongoing maintenance is not feasible. The safety of our volunteers, staff and the travelling public is always our first priority.
The Pause Stop campaign aims to complement the long-standing Driver Reviver program, providing additional avenues and resources for drivers to pause from the road along their journey.

Driver fatigue remains a major contributor to road trauma on state-controlled roads in Central Queensland. Under the auspices of Safe Communities, the Road Accident Action Group (RAAG) in Mackay and the Department of Transport & Main Roads (TMR) trialled a community-based signage initiative to encourage motorists to utilise designated rest and pull-over areas on the stretch of Bruce Highway between Ogden and Mackay. As part of the evaluation of the trial, TMR designed and conducted a roadside survey over three weekends at two Driver Reviver sites and one roadhouse. The aim of the survey was to determine drivers’ reasons for stopping and seek feedback on formal rest areas on the network. The results indicated a need for increased rest areas with suitably located signage and functional amenities. The outcomes of the trial subsequently informed a larger infrastructure project to increase the number of rest areas and stopping places in the Bowen Basin area. A community, government and industry working group, led by RAAG was formed in October 2010. The working group has meet on a regular basis to progress decision-making on the identification and mapping of proposed rest area sites, standards to be applied to each individual site based on functionality, concept design layouts, and progression of a master plan to guide the delivery of works. Site selection and specifications have been informed by crash and vehicle movement data, a comprehensive network audit and extensive consultation with internal and external stakeholders. The multi-method approach to developing the master plan is the focus of this practitioner paper.
