unveils the official logo
for the International Day of
Air Sports

FAI
has unveiled the official
logo for the International
Day of Air Sports, a new
global initiative to be
celebrated annually on 14
October from 2026 onwards.
Following
the launch of the initiative
earlier this year, the new
visual identity gives the
International Day of Air
Sports a shared symbol for the
worldwide air sports community
as preparations continue for
its first edition.

Lausanne,
home of air sports, to host
the 120th FAI General
Conference in October 2026

The
dynamic Swiss city of
Lausanne – where sport,
innovation, and global
cooperation come together –
will host the 120th FAI
General Conference from
14-16 October 2026,
commencing with the
first-ever International Day
of Air Sports on 14 October.
Delegates
from FAI Member organisations
around the globe will be
welcomed to Lausanne to
connect, exchange ideas, and
strengthen relationships.

40th
FAI World Gliding
Championships in Poland:
winners

The
40th FAI World Gliding
Championships ran from 19 to
30 May 2026 at
Częstochowa-Rudniki airfield
in southern Poland.
Three classes competed — Open,
18 Metre, and 20 Metre
Multi-Seat — across ten
scoring tasks that ranged from
tight Assigned Area Tasks on
marginal days to long
fixed-route races exceeding
800 km on the best days.

Results
of the 2026 Open Polish
Helicopter Championships

In
May, Płock in Poland became
the capital of helicopter
sport: the Polish Open
Helicopter Championships
were held with competitions
in Fender Rigging and Slalom
disciplines, showcasing the
precision, skill and
teamwork of the crews
involved.
The event was organised by the
Polish Helisport Aviation
Association, and included
helicopter displays and
attractions for families to
encourage the development of
helicopter sport.

Countdown
begins for the 2026 FAI
European Championships for
Space Models

At
a time when missions such as
Artemis are reigniting
global fascination with
space exploration, Europe's
best space modellers will
compete in Włocławek,
Poland, from 14–20 August
2026 at the 2026 FAI
European Championships for
Space Models, battling for
the continental title.
Over six days of competition,
participants will put their
technical expertise,
aerodynamic precision and
rocket-powered designs to the
test across multiple Space
Model classes.

Championship for Electric
Powered Thermal Duration
Gliders to take place in
Abbeville, France

The
2026 FAI F5J European
Championship for Electric
Powered Thermal Duration
Gliders will take place in
Abbeville, France, from 16
to 22 August 2026.
The Championship will bring
together senior and junior
pilots from across Europe for
a week of high-level
competition at the airfield of
the Aeroclub of
Abbeville-Buigny-Baie de
Somme. Around 25 nations are
expected to take part in the
competition. As part of the
event, the organisers also
plan to promote aeromodelling
and aviation through two open
days designed to introduce
visitors to the discipline and
highlight aviation careers.

Atlantic
Explorer completes first
crewed transatlantic
crossing by hydrogen balloon

After
more than 70 hours in the
air, three balloonists from
the USA and Britain have
become the first to complete
a transatlantic balloon
flight using hydrogen gas as
their sole source of onboard
lift.
The Atlantic Explorer hydrogen
balloon safely landed near
Bastendorf and the village of
Tandel in Luxembourg at on 7
June 2026 at 0419 UTC.
Preliminary data indicates the
balloon was in the air for
more than 70 hours.

Balloonists”: new
documentary on the Piccard
and Jones Orbiter 3
circumnavigation

Back
in 1999, a high stakes race
was grabbing headlines
around the globe: who would
be the first to make a
non-stop circumnavigation of
the Earth by balloon?
A new documentary has been
released this month which
takes an in-depth look at the
context of this high-profile
aeronautical feat. Compiling
original footage with personal
interviews, 'The Balloonists'
provides a remarkable insight
into the gripping story of how
explorer Bertrand Piccard and
Brian Jones took off from
Switzerland on the "last great
aviation prize" in the Orbiter
3 balloon.

FAI
establishes Athletes Working
Group to strengthen athlete
voice

FAI
has established a new
Athletes Working Group,
created to ensure that the
perspectives, interests and
welfare of athletes across
all air sports are
appropriately represented in
the governance,
decision-making and
development of FAI.
Approved by the FAI General
Conference in 2025 and
implemented in 2026, the
Athletes Working Group has
been established in line with
recognised international best
practices. It will serve as a
consultative and advisory body
to the FAI General Conference,
the Executive Board and the
Air Sport Commissions.

Meet
Kamil Mankowski, the new
CIMA Secretary expanding
competitions worldwide

Polish
pilot, coach, and
championship director Kamil
Mankowski has stepped into
the role of Secretary for
the FAI Microlight &
Paramotor Commission (CIMA),
following his election at
the annual plenary in
February alongside new
President Krisztian Dolhai.
Having lived the sport as
competitor, coach, and
organiser, Mankowski has hit
the ground running. In just a
few months he has already
delivered six Category 2
competitions onto the CIMA
calendar, a tangible first
result for pilots and
organisers looking for more
FAI-sanctioned events
worldwide.
