I started the list when a long thread on the subject started in an
online legal resources list, where it was very off-topic. Since the
folks involved seemed to want to continue the discussion, and I knew
that it could be an interesting (if difficult) discussion that had to
take place among -all- views.
This can be a -very- difficult subject, and certainly engenders strong
feelings. A lot is changing in this field of law -- and in a very
public way. Who hasn't heard of Dr. Kervorkian these days? And of all
the laws in so many states now, purporting to establish the rights of
individuals to decide their own fates -- or to take away those rights
"for their own protection." A very difficult subject.
I also remember my eldest sister, asking that she be allowed to die
rather than continue with a destructive disease that eventually crippled
and then killed her. "Whose Life Is It, Anyway?" But I didn't want her
to die. None of us did. Just her.
