Is that ok? We could then use it to make the output of some rc commands
unbuffered to avoid the performance issues with the pinger?

IIRC there was some discussion when it was last mentioned as to
whether the API might be better, but if there is prior art in FreeBSD
and Gnu/Linux and the API is at least acceptable....
