Things--SI [Java, Javascript, ShockWave Flash]
http://www.si.edu/organiza/museums/ripley/eap/rt/

Revealing Things is the Smithsonian Institution's first specifically web based
exhibit; both the content and design of the site are fascinating. This work in
progress is a
prototype of a future, more fully-developed exhibit. It concentrates on
"common, everyday objects to tell stories about people, their cultures, and
the meanings they
associate with their possessions." Items discussed include a 1937 chemistry
set, a Vietnam memorial offering, a duckpin bowling ball, an early TV, and a
celery vase, among many others. Organized according to theme, era, and object,
the exhibit is presented in a new pop-up browser window. Within that window,
navigation takes place via "maplets," a connected series of moving colored
labels representing the three ways that the exhibit is organized. Users can
move slider bars to effect the placement of the labels, and search on terms to
create their own thematic or object-based exhibit.

When the cursor is placed over an object label, scrolling text introduces it.
Alternatively, the site can be navigated via a series of icons that run down
the middle of the exhibition page. When an icon is clicked, the series of
icons may rearrange. Each exhibit contains a photo of the object, along with
written commentary on it. In addition, sound is sometimes available to play
period music, or render out loud the exhibition text. The most fully-developed
object at this time is "Patched Bellbottoms." Users are advised to read the
help files on both the main page and the exhibit page for navigation tips.
The exhibit is a fascinating precursor of what could be a new way to
interactively view museum exhibits, allowing the user to cast off the
restraints of a linear orientation. Note that the exhibit is extremely
browser and bandwidth intensive.

Hi everybody :)

The Italians fascinate me cause they are so contradictory and unexpected.

Like Italians themselves love destroyer Italians like John Gotti
http://www.gotti.com/johngotti.html
http://www.gotti.com/

and the rest of the world loves creative Italians like Taddeo Gaddi,
who's probly _related_ to JG in some weird trail of life.
http://sunserv.kfki.hu/~arthp/html/g/gaddi/index.html

GADDI, Italian family of painters
"
Taddeo Gaddi 1334-1366 ca
Taddeo Gaddi was the most important and constant of Giotto's pupils, with
whom he was associated for over twenty years. He imitated Giotto very
closely, though he never equalled him. Indeed, the great number of Giotto's
pupils were always behind their master in the best qualities of his art.
Gaddi's early work was his best, showing how much owed to the direct influence
of
Giotto. He differed from his master in the length and attention that he often
gave to the limbs of his figures, and his tendency to add greater variety to
background style and content. His major works include scenes from the
"Life of Christ" in the Florentine Academy, and his remarkable "Pieta" (Yale
University, Art Museum). Many frescoes formerly attributed to this artist are
now lost.

Gaddo di Zanobi Gaddi 1239-1312
Gaddi was the father of Taddeo, and the first of a prominent family of
Florentine painters. He was a friend of Cimabue, whom he survived by
twelve years. He was also a friend of Andrea Tafi and a worker in mosaics.
Vasari speaks of many of his works, both paintings and mosaics, but the
only remaining ones that can be attributed to him are some mosaics in the
portico of Saint Maria Maggiore, in Rome, which were executed in 1308,
and possibly others in the cathedrals of Florence and Pisa, and in the
Baptistery at Florence.
"

Later everybody, tres late :) :) :)

Title: Teachers See Benefits of Internet, But Drawbacks Raise Concerns
Source: New York Times (CyberTimes)
<http://www.nytimes.com/library/tech/98/03/cyber/articles/15poll.html>

Author: Pamela Mendels
Issue: EdTech

Description: The Global Strategy Group Inc., a New York City-based public
opinion research company, conducted a survey in January based on telephone
interviews with 400 teachers and 1,600 other adults nation-wide. The poll
found that 48 percent of the teachers responded "yes" to the question: Do
you use the Internet in teaching? Yet at the same time, 60 percent of
teachers and 62 percent of the adults surveyed said they were "fairly
concerned" or "very concerned" about students using the Internet. Peter J.
Feld, director of research for Global Strategy Group Inc,. said: "What was
most striking to me was that teachers see both sides: the benefits of the
Internet and the downside." He said that "teachers see the Internet as a
plus, but it has drawbacks and they are looking for ways to cope with the
drawbacks." Based on focus groups conducted in preparation for the survey,
Feld identified several problems that teachers envision with using the
Internet for education. Among them: "that information available on the World
Wide Web is of uneven quality; that the unscrupulous could prey on children;
that there is a glut of online information and that navigating the Web can
be cumbersome and time-consuming." At the same time, Feld points out that
he was struck by the fact that although the World Wide Web is barely four
years old, almost half of the teachers surveyed are using it and other parts
of the Internet for educational purposes. The survey was commissioned by MCI
in connection with the launch of MarcoPolo, "a new free Web site and
education initiative targeted at teachers, that MCI helped develop with
National Geographic, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the American
Association for the Advancement of Science and the National Council of
Economic Education. [For more on connecting schools, see

For those of you who have been following the Explorers of the West
Sketchbook Project I thought you might be interested in knowing that a copy
of the sketchbook on explorer James Hector containing the work of some 300
North American students was last week presented to students at the
KeriKeri Primary School on the northern tip of New Zealand.

James Hector, later Sir James, was part of the first scientific expedition
of western British North America in the 1850s. Later, he explored and
became one of New Zealand's leading citizens. The project is an effort to
help children discover our global connections. Students and teachers
wishing to participate in this years sketchbook which will be presented in
Ireland are invited to check out the home page at
