Urgent Security Advisory: WhatsApp Account Compromise & Preventive Measures

Unique Madonnite,

We hope this message finds you well.

As you all may know, the WhatsApp account of one of our members has been compromised. The hacker is already contacting members (including I, the Chairman 🤦🏿‍♂️🤦🏿‍♂️) and may continue to attempt to contact other members, requesting OTPs (One-Time Passwords) or sensitive information. Please disregard any such requests and avoid sharing any codes, personal information, or clicking on unverified links.

In light of this incident, we strongly advise all members to take proactive steps to secure their WhatsApp accounts.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) and implement additional security measures:

 1. How to Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) on WhatsApp:
 • Open WhatsApp.
• Go to Settings (⚙️).
• Select Privacy.
• Tap Two-Step Verification.
• Click Enable.
• Set a 6-digit PIN and confirm it.
• Provide an email address for account recovery (optional but recommended).
This adds an extra layer of protection, preventing unauthorized access even if your SIM card or verification code is compromised.

 2. Additional Recommendations for WhatsApp Security:
• Do Not Share OTPs: Never share your verification code or OTP with anyone, even if they claim to be from WhatsApp or other trusted sources.
• Watch for Suspicious Messages: Be cautious of messages requesting sensitive information, especially from unfamiliar numbers or even familiar contacts acting unusually.
• Enable Device Login Notifications: WhatsApp alerts you when your account is accessed from a new device. Always review such notifications promptly.
• Regularly Review Linked Devices:
• Open WhatsApp > Settings > Linked Devices.
• Remove any unrecognized devices.
• Use Strong Phone Security: Set a strong lock screen password/PIN and avoid sharing your phone unlock code.
• Regularly Update WhatsApp: Always use the latest version of WhatsApp to benefit from the latest security patches.

 3. If Your Account Is Compromised: • Immediately notify your contacts to avoid falling victim to scams.
• Email WhatsApp support at sup...@whatsapp.com with the subject “Lost/Stolen Account”.
• Request deactivation by providing your phone number in the international format (+234 for Nigeria).
• Reinstall WhatsApp and verify your number as soon as possible.

Your online security is paramount, and we encourage all members to implement these measures promptly.
Should you have any concerns or need further assistance, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Stay vigilant. Stay secure.

Warm regards,
Olisaemeka U. Idigo
Chairman, MUAALAG
