Auto-update at launch

How to run (mu4e-update-mail-and-index) when mu4e is launched? I tried
this: (add-hook 'mu4e-main-mode-hook 'mu4e-update-mail-and-index). But,
it breaks mu4e-main-mode. It becomes blank.

It should run automatically when you start, so the hook is unnecessary.

If it doesn't work, likely there's something not quite working with the
retrieval process; you can check e.g. the *mu4e-last-update* buffer,
and/or run M-x mu4e-update-mail-and-index and carefully check for any
errors.
