Morning All,

One of the pharmaceutical companies began sending vials with the GS1 datamatrix barcodes. This barcode symbology isn't new and our scanners support them fully. The issue is a complete GS1 contains the GTIN, Lot and Expiration date. Meditech and Omnicell do not know how to parse this data to store in appropriate fields so we created parsing rules for the scanners to only send the GTIN. The issue is with the omnicell scanners. They are DS4801 wired scanners. These scanners do not support the parsing rules that our DS8178s do.

If we scan the entire GS1 as a barcode it means the pharmacy techs need to validate each vial and add them if they have a different Lot and Expiration date. Lots of work effort.

Any ideas?

Hi Mark,

Have you checked with Omnicell? I know that their scanners don't support the same exact programming as the newer more common ones used bedside, but I believe Omnicell has provided clients in the past with barcodes to scan that take care of the GS1 parsing in a more limited fashion to return the NDC of the item. On the flip side, you could replace the Omnicell's scanners with something more capable, but that's a cost, and really Omnicell should be providing the updated programming codes for you.

Thanks Andrew,

I do have a ticket open with Omnicell about this and also have Zebra looking into it as well. Thought someone out there in our community might have already encountered this and wanted to share the solution.

Our site is having issues with IMO being down. We contacted them. They said there is no issue. Are any other sites having this issue?
It is so interconnected now with our site it is causing downtime in Admissions. Last time it happened we were first to let them know there was an issue.

Please disregard everyone. It turned out to be an Internet routing issue with our provider. Not an IMO or Meditech issue.
