We use Communication Director to send results to the ordering (Referring) providers. In Communication Director if a provider does not have a fax number it errors, so it's something we can easily follow up on.
Some of the practices that work with the hospital frequently have interfaces set up for ORU results.
Maintaining a provider dictionary is a challenge, and here my manager and I oversee it, by getting a SQL report of changes on a weekly basis to make sure the formats are correct and the data is populated.

Subject: [EXTERNAL] [MT-L] Magic 5.67 Outpatient Labs
Hi L-List,
Question...do your facilities allow non-facility providers to order outpatient labs and imaging studies? If so, how do the providers get their results?
We are a rural hospital (not a reference lab) and for years, as a service to the community, have allowed to patients bring in orders from providers not associated to our hospital for outpatient studies.
For a few years, we have struggled with the providers receiving results. We have several Lab telecom reports set up for this purpose, but our provider dictionary is not maintained by any one person/department, so there are times when results do not go out.
Any words of wisdom?
THANKS!!
Thank You,
Lynelle Boyd, RN
