Eric Ederer wrote to me about a Kickstarter project of his in a message I share below. My response to him follows.

What of Aaron's idea to launch relevant MELM projects on kickstarter? I think Ultratonal piano is a worthy candidate if we can work out the details.

Oz.

Hello Ozan bey! Although too late for the MELM conference, I?m writing to let you know that I have designed a new musical instrument for playing Near Eastern and Just Intonation musics, which I call the Nautilauta, and I?m inviting you to help me ?crowd-fund? the making of a prototype through the website Kickstarter, here:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/610528987/the-nautilauta

The way Kickstarter works, people pledge whatever amount they wish toward the project (and there are various levels of ?reward? for doing so), but if the funding goal isn?t met then no-one pays anything. (I?ve helped fund 2 projects already, myself.) If funding for the Nautilauta comes together by February 28 then luthier Josh Humphrey of Eugene, Oregon will start building the prototype, and it should be ready to play by May 15, 2012.

Of course I would appreciate a pledge of any amount from you, but even if you could only send this email along to someone who might also be even a little interested in the project, I would be very grateful!

Thanks very much!
Best wishes,
Eric Ederer

Dear Eric,

Quite charming; however my 79-tone qanun was already proposed back in 2006-7 as an instrument capable of incorporating the intonation havens of all Maqam cultures in the Middle East and possibly beyond (in my own recorded words I'm sure); so Nautilauta will not be a first in this regard.

The amixing of Pythagorean expressions with what appears to be 11-limit Just Intonation ratios for the frets seems cute. But I hardly can conceive Persians consenting solely to this scheme with their obvious 13-limit ratios such as 13/12, 39/32, etc...

You say here:

http://ericederer.com/misc/instruments/images/53tET-Fretting-and-Ratios_lavta_actual_Dec-2011.jpg

that those frets could be incorporated at the expense of 10/9? What is the proposed fretting scheme exactly, if you don't mind me asking?

I would like to support innovation, I sure do. But without the inclusion of frets strictly applying to Persian intonation, as well as elsewhere, and leaving modulation issues somewhat in the dark, the claims in the video sound a bit far-fetched. :)

Well effort on the advertising though. :)

In-tuneness is so much over-rated I think, that my pledge would only be symbolic here. I shall henceforth announce your kickstarter project to my circles.

Thanks!
Dr. Oz.
