Dear Friends of Trails,
A crack team of 13 (Laura DeGroot, Bob Ordemann, Wendy Good, Derek Cianci, Sandra Tobies, Tim & Geraldine Leach, Susan Mercer, Greg Mendes, Russ Murray, Connor Griffiths, Greg Sheldon, and myself) made quick work (under 2 hours!) of chain sawing, clearing the trail of limbs, trimming, de-stumping, blowing off the duff, and leveling a few short slanted sections. We cleared a number of dead trees away from the stream next to the trail entrance to enhance the scenery and we picked up a small bit of trash. And last but not least, by any measure, two trailhead posts were installed on the cul-de-sac. It is a very nice way to get to Wharton Plantation and Gamlin Crystal Spring areas (and beyond) from the neighborhoods in the northeast corner of Groton near the border with Dunstable. Thank you to all the volunteers who really cooperated in great fashion to make this project successful.
The entrance to the other trail access off Whispering Brook Rd. (at the stream crossing nearer to Old Dunstable Rd.) was mowed and the trail was cleared of some minor limbs. Some larger trunks need to be removed from the trail, but the water is very high now and we’ll have to wait to do that work until after the area dries out (if that ever happens this year!). The trail can be navigated by foot either by leaping over wet areas or by having boots on, but it is not suitable for mountain biking or equestrian use.
Next Saturday, the trail project will be to put in a new section of trail to create a loop trail adjacent to Brooks Orchard. The work will be very similar to the work that was done today, except for a great deal more chainsaw work that will be required to cut a path through several large trees that were felled by the microburst of May 15, 2020. Please plan to meet at Williams Barn at 10:00 am on September 18th. Hand saws and loppers will be useful, as will hands and arms. Hope you can make it and enjoy one of the last days of summer in the essentially bug-free woods.
Happy Trails,
Paul
