Dear Friends of Trails,
The When, Who, and What: on Saturday morning, September 10, a crack team of trail volunteers assembled in the parking area of the Groton Town Forest for a project.
The Goal: to re-route the existing trail that goes down to the Nashua River.
The Reason: to put the trail onto Town Forest land after the boundary line was surveyed and much of the trail was found to be on the private properties of Ames Meadow residents.
The Effort: 15 people, 3 hours. Moved many fallen trees and branches off the new corridor; cut some small trees down; blew off the duff; removed stumps; levelled out the ground in places; cut some low brush in places; removed trail markers from old trail and added them to the new trail; blocked the ends of the old trail.
The Result: a new 600-foot trail was built that is more distant from the nearby homes and more interesting (i.e., not as straight as the old trail). The width of this trail should also accommodate tractors that need to access the conservation field along the river for harvesting and maintenance tasks.
The Thanks: to Lisa Irelan, Rich Lynch, Wanfang and Russ Murray, Jim Molaskey, John Llodra, Matt Miller, Britt and Rita McKinley, Bruce Pinto, Dan and Hannah Pierpoint, Greg Mendes, and Marion Stoddart. A special thanks to Matt who brought his tractor that was used to remove a number of small tree stumps with the assistance of many Pulaski and axe-wielding trail builders. All toes and digits remained intact.
Happy Trails,
Paul
