Dear Friends of Trails and NDO,

Sorry for the short notice, but I just got back from today’s work project and can tell you what still needs to be done.  Please join us at 10:00 tomorrow (Saturday) morning at 210 Chicopee Row.  You can park in the dirt driveway, but please do not drive on the new grass.  Please park only on the even side of Chicopee Row if there is no room left on the dirt driveway.  Pull as far off the road as possible.  You could also park at Williams Barn and take the trail behind the houses on Chicopee Row.

PLEASE BE OBSERVANT OF THE TRAFFIC ON CHICOPEE ROW AS YOU CROSS BACK AND FORTH!  GIVE CARS THE RIGHT-OF-WAY SO THAT WE OBSTRUCT TRAFFIC AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE.

Today we used heavy equipment to do the lion’s share of earth moving needed to create a ramp down to street level where the Brown Trail meets Chicopee Row.  But we need a large number of people to finish up tomorrow with some manual labor.  The jobs are as follows:

  1. Reduce the slope of the dirt walls in places
  2. Do some smoothing out of the dirt that was removed from the excavation.  The tractors did most of this work already, but some finishing work is needed.
  3. Spread out wood chips on the treadway as well as on the excavated dirt.
  4. Rebuild the stone wall at the old entrance using the stones that were removed from the wall at the excavation site

If you have a (short-tined) garden rake, please bring it.  A shovel would probably be useful in places as well.

Wear work gloves!

I will bring a wheelbarrow for moving the wood chips, but if you have one that you can bring without too much trouble, please do.

I think all the work can be done in a couple of hours if we get a dozen people or more, so please come if you possibly can.  Thanks, and I hope to see you tomorrow!

Happy Trails,

Paul
