Dear Friends of Trails,
Today we finished up the work on the Brown Trail at Chicopee Row. We aligned the trails on either side of the road, created a flat “landing area” for safety in crossing Chicopee on the Walker Conservation Area side of the road, and built a ramp with a modest grade to connect the landing area to the old trail. We spread wood chips (courtesy of Groton’s DPW!) over the trail and on top of the dirt that was excavated and smoothed out. We also replaced the stone wall across the old trail and repaired the rest of the stone wall in the area. Many thanks go to Steve Legge, Jim Peregoy, Wanfang and Russ Murray, Sue Mercer, Bob and Carter Hill, Tim Leach, and Sandra Tobies for showing up on such short notice. They whole team was remarkably productive and efficient and we finished in exactly one hour! Thanks to all of you for doing such a great job. A very special thanks goes to Groton’s DPW for excavating the new Brown Trail that was within the Chicopee Row right-of-way as well as for removing a medium size tree on July 13th. But the “super volunteer” award goes to Jack Petropoulos, who spent nearly 5 hours excavating the trail ramp on Saturday with his back hoe/tractor. I used his smaller lawn tractor with a bucket on it to spread the excavated dirt around in the woods nearby, but it wasn’t powerful enough to do all that was necessary and so Jack finished that work up as well. This whole project wouldn’t have been possible if not for Jack’s talents, equipment, and generous gifts of his time in planning and executing the excavation.
To all, thanks for a truly group effort with a great result.
Happy Trails,
Paul
