Hi folks,

Does anyone want to go skiing at Timberline this Saturday, Jan. 10, 2026?  Here's the situation.  Currently, Timberline has a 24"  base.  But a big winter storm is coming this Tuesday and Wednesday, which will bring at least 2 or 3 more feet of snow.

It will continue snowing through Thursday and Friday. And the forecast for Saturday is a sunny day and relatively warm with a high of 35ºF

Note that Timberline almost never gets crowded and lift lines are short or non-existent.  That's because Timberline's lifts have a much higher capacity than their parking lots.

So, parking is the only big issue.  On a sunny day this early in the season, the parking lots will all fill up and Timberline employees will close Timberline Road.  This often happens by 7:45 am.  So, it is important to arrive at Timberline by 7:30 am.  Then snooze in your car for about an hour.

If you don't believe me about how uncrowded Timberline can be even when the parking lots are full, take a look at a short video I made a few years ago on a similar sunny Saturday.  You won't believe your eyes.  See "A Day at Timberline" on YouTube at:  https://youtu.be/BmPwvmEXF-U

Join me at Timbeline this Saturday.  Let's meet at the rear exist from the day lodge, near the free ski check at 9 am.  We'll wait for the Mt. Hood Express bus, which usually arrives right at 9 am.  Or a few minutes later near the lower parking lot.

Hi,  Emilio.

I plan to go up. I'll be taking shuttle from Sandy. Not a morning person, so probably will arrive 10:15 - 10:30. Will try to connect when I get there.

Debbie

Hi Jeff and Debbie,

Jeff, the Timberline shuttle from the Summit Pass ski area in Govy to Timberline has not been operating yet, due to insufficient snow and the fact that you can't yet ski from Timberline to the Summit Pass ski area. But, it is possible that there just might be enough  snow by Saturday that they might start the shuttles.  Best to check about the shuttle situation on Timberline's website.  Look for an announcement on their CONDITIONS page.

Debbie, I understand.  I took the Mt. Hood Express bus from Sandy myself once or twice, and I often take it from Government Camp to Timberline.  It's a fairly long ride from Sandy, but it costs only $2, and it brings you up to Timberline even if Timberline Road gets closed to car traffic.

Oh, I just checked.  The bus schedule has changed.  The bus that used to arrive at Timberline at 9 am now arrives at 8:30 am. The old schedule was a bit irregular, but now the buses run exactly every 2 hours.  Not counting the bus that leaves Sandy at 5:15 am, which is probably only good for Timberline and Skibowl employees, the buses that are of interest to us run as follows:

Sandy  Skibowl  Govy  Timberline
 7:15    8:02    8:10     8:30
 9:15   10:02   10:10    10:30
11:15   12:02   12:10    12:30
 1:15pm  2:02    2:10     2:30
 3:15pm  4:02    4:10     4:30

Thje bus actually stops at 3 locations in Government Camp:  at the Best Western Hotel, at Collins Lake Resort, and at the Gas Station next to the Summit Pass ski area.  The times given above are for Collins Lake Resort.

This new timetable is better in a number of ways.  It is easier to remember, always exactly 2 hours apart.  And the 11:15 am bus closes the gap that used to exist around noon.

Mostly, just the first two buses are suitable for arriving in the morning.  I listed the next 3 buses mainly because they are useful to get us back to Timberline if we ski down the Glade Trail during the day.  If we time it right, we can get back up to Timberline by being in front of Collins Lake Resort at either 12:10,  2:10,  or 4:10 pm.

That is if we park at Timberline.  But, quite often, I park in Government Camp and take the bus from there. So, I can then ski down the Glade Trail at the end fo the day and my car will be waiting for me in Govy, so I can then drive straight home.  Note that the Glade Trail is normally not groomed, but often quite skied out by the locals.  It is only groomed one day a year, on the first Saturday in March, specifically for the "Ski the Glade Trail Day".

Anyone interested in the Mt. Hood Express bus, you can read all about it starting on our website, www.mthigh.org . Scroll down the NEWS column - the white column on the left side of the page - until you see a short blurb about the Mt. Hood Express bus.  At the end of that short article, you will find a link to the bus schedule.  Or go directly to thesschedule with  this link:  https://www.mthoodexpress.com/schedule-map .

Debbie, we;ll be look for you ashortly after 10:30 am.  Look for at least a few of us wit the orange flags attached to our ski poles. It looks like this:

Hi Diane  and others,

Let's start this issue as a new topic.  Diane, commented on the proposal to go skiing this coming Saturday.  But, the lift ticket prices deserve to be treated like a separate subject.  So, here goes.

Timberline recently sent out an email to people subscribing to their news ans updates.  They apologized for having to raise their lift ticket prices due to the rising cost of insurance for ski areas in Oregon.  Of the two insurance companies that covered Oeegon ski areas, one of them has left Oregon.  And there is a potential danger that the only remaining one might leave too, in which case many Oregon ski areas might have to close immediately.

The insurance issue is due to excessive million-dollar lawsuits against ski areas for accidents that are mainly just accidents and not the ski area's fault.  We all thought that by purchasing a lift ticket, the text printed on them is a liability release protecting the ski area.  But some 10 years ago, some Oregon judges ruled that this liability release form cannot be enforced and basically doesn't mean anything in Oregon.  Oregon is the only State with this problem.  Unless Oregon's Congress passes a law to fix this, all Oregon ski areas are in trouble.

This is what Timberline said to explain how the rising cost of insurance in Oregon and the multi-million dollar lawsuits have forced Timberline to raise their lift ticket prices to $170.

Unfortunately, it gets even worse in many other States, where the big names, the most popular ski areas have raused their day ticket prices into the stratosphere, mainly because they want to force everyone to buy a season pass.

For example, I am contemplating a potential ski safari through Wyoming, to ski at all 10 ski areas there.  Most of them are welcoming and with reasonable prices, around $50 - $70. A couple would be free to me becauswe of the INDY Pass, and one is free for al senoirs over 70 years old.   But Jackson Hole (the famous one in Wyoming) charges: $250 - $300  (depending on the day of the month).   Even with a Senior discount, if I want to ski there in the second half of Feburary, I would have to pay $256.  Some discount, eh?

And if you go to places like Deer Valley, UT, or any of the more famous Vail Resorts, prices go to well over $300 for a single day of skiing.  Who can afford that?

This is just one of the many reasons why I am avoiding the big resorts these days.  There is plenty of skiing available for as little as $15 or $20 per day at smaller ski areas.

At Mt. Hood, the only solution, for now, is to buy a season pass.    And you have to buy it early, befote the season starts.  The earlier you buy it, the less expenmsive it is.  And, right now, Timberline and Skibowl's Fuusion Pass is not available any more.

But it's still not the end of the world.   The best deal ffor inexpensive skiing is yet to come.  A Spring Pass is the best deal on the mountain.  It has not been announced yet.  Timberline will announce it in the first days of March.  Meadows will probably announce their Spring Pass at the end of February.

A Spring Pass costs approximately as much as 2 regular day tickets, or just a bit more.  That means that if you ski at least 3 times during Spring, a Spring Pass will be well worth it.  A Spring Pass at Timberline is valid for almost all of Marfch, April and May.  That's 3 months of skiing for the price of approximately 2 day tickets.

And Spring is the best time to ski the canyons west of Timberline. I offer a free, just for fun, guided tour any time I am at Timberline during the Spring.

But then comes summer, and you can forget about skiing then.  Summer prices skyrocket again, and you get less and less terrain to ski.  When skiing narrows down to just the Palmer snowfield, the whole snowfield is subdivided into several lanes.  Most lanes are reserved for the various summer camps.  Only one lane is open to the public. And there is no summer pass.  You have to pay the high day ticket price.  It's expensive and with ever narrowing terrain.

So, keep a Spring Pass in mind.   Spring is the best time to ski.  Warmer weather, sunny days, and inexpensive skiing.

FYI-

This weekend at Timberline would be off peak. Adults up to 64 $124. Recently due to low snow and only couple three lifts operating I saw ticket prices advertised at $99 but heard on lift $75.  Meadows site for coming weekend says $119.

TLine Summer lift ticket prices, last year Adults was $110.

No, that pricing was on Dec 31st as heard on the chair. Due to low snow, Timberline's window price, this past Dec, was pricing an adult lift (Under 64 yrs) at $99.00

This weekend is not a holiday so the second tier "Non Peak" pricing is calling for $124.

Think the bigger question is:
-What's the pricing for over 65'? I don't know the answer.

Emilio is on to something for the weekend. The freeze level is forecasted below Government Camp thru Friday. Timberline's reporting that the Mile is going to run today and they have had Palmer running recently. Friday the forecast is for the freezing level to rise thru the weekend. Mt. Hood Climbers came out with a report, yesterday, that above 7,000' that the snowpack has been building. All this indicates Alpine skiing possibility for the weekend. Whether Timberline will be able to perform Storm recovery on Palmer remains a question. Looks like Friday weather may allow. That would be great as the midway station was operating on the 31st of Dec (Good for laps). But even if recovery doesn't happen, a lift ticket includes Sno Cat ride(s) to top of Palmer on nice days.

Here is what I am finding on Ti,mberline's website:

1. SHUTLES.  They would love to start the shuttles running from Summit Pass, and they'll do it as soon as there is enough snow.

2.  A webcam at the top of the Summit Pass lift shows what looks like plenty of snow.  Not sure what it looks like at the bottom of the lift, in Government Camp. It's possible that the shuttles MIGHT start running this weekend.

3. Lift ticket prices have been fluctuation due to poor snow conditions. They are still reduced right now, but it's stormy up there and onlyt Bruno's (the beginner lift) and Pucci are open right now.  It's too foggy and probably too windy on the Mile and on Palmer.  But, y this weekend, it is most likely that all the 4 lower lifts will be open and that the prices will go back up to the new "normal".

Normal prices are as follows:

AGE GROUP      MID-WEEK   WEEKEND
Adult (19-64)    $124      $170
Adult half day   $ 92      $119
Senior (65+)     $ 80      $ 97

Half-day tickets are from noon to closing time.
Apparently, there are no half-day tickets for seniors.

I wish ski areas didn't charge more on weekends.  It doesn't really cost them any more to run the lifts on weekends than mid-week.  Personally, I really prefer skiing on weekends becasue I really don't like having to drive in rush hour traffic, both in the morning and in the afternoon on a week day.

Obviously, ski areas want us to come up mid-week, but at the expense of battling rush-hour traffic.

Once again, Emilio is right. This is why he's the sage expert. I assumed and didn't read the fine print about "Peak Days".

KGW is reporting that Tline spokesman Jon Burton, said today, they "hope to have all their lifts running soon."

Today:

TODAY AT TIMBERLINE

Bruno's, Pucci Scheduled to Operate TODAY!  We will continue to operate daily and open more lifts as conditions allow. Continue to check back for operational updates.

**REDUCED LIFT TICKET RATE TODAY OF $97**

Should be up there first thing in the morning on Saturday. Planning on staying Friday night at Cascade in Govy. Fingers crossed that more terrain is open. Molly's is supposed to be open tomorrow for anyone who likes to ski the ungroomed stuff. See you Saturday! Forecast says maybe a Bluebird day. Think I'd rather have flurries, though, at this point.

I am at Mt Hood Meadows today, Wednesday. They got a nice amount of snow. All groomed blue runs ski nicely. 16 more inches of snow expected thru Friday, so the weekend at Timberline should be good.
Best regards
