I spent this past Saturday, Jan. 10, skiing with Jeff Hornick at Timberline.  Plenty of snow and all the usual lifts were open.  We didn't connect with Kurt Wilke, who came later.  Sorry, Kurt, my quads were hurting and I quit early in the day, before you came up.

Funny thing happened.  All day, I felt a little unsteady on my skis.  Even just getting off the lift felt a little wobbly.  I attributed it to this being my first day and my muscles were probably not strong enough to keep the skis steady.  But I was wrong.

At the end of my day, as I was taking my skis off and started walking toward my car, I noticed that I had my boots well buckled, but they were in the WALKING mode!  I have alpine touring boots, which provide fantastic flexibility when walking, up to 50 or 60 degrees of motion.  That's great for walking, but not for skiing.

When skiing like that, my boots were just too soft and flexible, not providing enough support.  The connection between my legs and my skis was too weak.  No wonder it felt wobbly.  Next time, I need to remember to flip the switch on my boots to skiing mode.

Here's Jeff, with Mt. Jefferson in the background.

There are SO many things to remember the first time you ski each year!  At least you have an explanation!

Nice picture of Jeff - he's coming to McCall, so I'll see him there!  Now we have TWO days where people could ski at Tamarack for $30/day, thanks to one of the Bogus Basin Ski Club members who works there!

And now for a commercial - while I'm on Google Groups with the club, I just started the NWSCC Silent Auction, and there is an INDY BASE PASS in the auction!!  These are sold out for this year, but this would be perfect for someone who likes to ski different places (like the McCall trip) and doesn't have a Meadows pass - since there are two Meadows midweek days included in that pass.  Go HERE to access the auction, which closes on January 22!
