I had written to the Warden about our problem and this is the reply I got.

"A lot of the girls in the Hostel will be moving rooms to adjust other
incoming members of the hostel. We have a huge crunch of rooms as the
incoming strength of students in the institute (more so for the PG's then
for the UG's) cannot be accommodated easily. We were not suppose to get
any fresh PG's/MTech this year but the situation has called for it and
again. Even many single seater's in Hostel 11 are doubled for the fresh
occupants and we also are going to get some of the PG's/Mtech's who cannot
be adjusted there. To the point there is talk of tripling some project
staff to adjust the incoming PG's/MTEch. We are talking to the director to
help us with some extra housing so such tripling measures are not
required.
I am sure the girls who are moving also have a heavy schedule of workload
and they also have to go through the trouble. The idea to request people
to move rooms is to club type of batches together which was becoming
difficult without any help from the Mtech's. I request you to cooperate
with Nancy as it is a very difficult task to accommodate over 460 girls.

The situation right now is how to accommodate everyone. We do not want to
shift people a lot and I guess Nancy is trying to do so but sometimes
everyone cannot be happy. However, please I would really want all PG's,
Mtech's and UGs to cooperate and help each other instead of only thinking
of themselves. This is my earnest request to all of you.

regards,

As you can all see, our Warden is also unable to help us. I am afraid that the HCU will also provide a similar response. The reply almost makes us M Tech students guilty of coming here to study. Why is it that our batch has to be the first to adjust everytime? Nobody talks of making the other PGs shift or relocate. The authorities will never acknowledge their fault of increasing the number of seats without  making the corresponding increase in hostel facilities. The point of clubbing batches together is also pretty much senseless, in my opinion. What is being accomplished is even more segregation.
In such a situation what should be the next step?
I will write to the HCU as well, but I am not very sure whether that will help.
Who else should we approach?

I think we need to take the matter to the HCU. But from what I can sense, not many people are interested to take a stand. I do not know the reason, maybe because they are not having to shift, at least for the time being. Whatever we do we need to do it fast.

Yes, we need to write to the HCU because suddenly the authorities might start listening to the complains of the new entrants and ask us to shift again in the near or not so near future . From what the Warden has said it seems that we would have to put up a really hard fight . So, better think quickly of answers about why we wont shift or why we wont become three-seaters .

Yes, HCU would be the next step. And I am even thinking of writing to the General Secretary, Hostel Affairs and the Dean, student affairs. Though I now I have doubts as to how effective it is going to be.Nevertheless we will do everything that can be done.

And the apathy of the rest of the girls is what I was afraid of the most.

Please girls understand the situation..it is not about you and me..it is about us..why are we letting ourselves to be played around with ? If we accept meekly what the authorities say, we wont inherit the earth !! All that will happen is they would again and again keep imposing this kind of suffering for the remaining tenure of our stay here . Please understand that a mere sorry doesnt and can not compensate for all the hardships endured during and after shifting . Why newcomers cant stay in the vacant rooms ? Let us put up posters regarding this or let us call a meeting of all M.Tech. gals in order to make them aware of the sword of uncertainty looming over their heads !!

The triple seater thing is hopefully only for project staff. But even that is not a solution. I agree that it will be difficult to convince the top brass, but then the important thing

The lack of foresight on the part of the authorities is disgusting. Here all efforts seem to be directed to having a great Mood Indigo or a Tech Fest or a PAF. Never mind what the students are going through.

exactly...if the basic stability is not there then how are we supposed to apply our minds to problems of greater significance ? Only if the students can live in peace can they do properly what thet are supposed to . But the authorities are least concerned about providing us with a certainty in our lodgings...they want to impose this nomadic lifestyle on us !! Why this lack of concern ? IIT-B should have given a thought to how many peolple it would be able to accomodate before passing on the brunt to us . It is us who are going to suffer for no fault of ours . It doesnt seem that such a world class institution is managed well !!

Hello All,
Going through the warden's mail, the first thing that occurs is that not even a single girl should relocate, so that they cannot give us such craps as, "I am sure the girls who are moving also have a heavy schedule of workload and they also have to go through the trouble."
Having the dearth of time that we are in right now, I think we should come up with a concrete plan of action asap.
To begin with let us form
1. a team of few for making the draft of the letter to HCU.
2. a team for collecting signs from all PGs.

Moreover we should explore all possible ways to overcome this situation. So we should discuss the matter among ourselves as also with our fellows in IITB in general so that no path is left bereft.
Any better/additional suggestion is warmly welcome (I think we can share the ideas face to face too, if not in mail).
Lets join hands and stop this non-sense.
Regards,

If the idea is to cluster similar batch students - v are already in
the cluster of MTechs. Then this argument could be ruled out if we are
asked to move to another location. I doubt many MTech student stays in
3rd floor.. Then its ridiculous to ask 6th floor people to move to 3rd
floor. As has been already mentioned by some1, the new occupants
should be given the currently unoccupied rooms. The available room
from which 6th floor people are asked to select is also like a
scattered list (N201, N203, N213, N310, N311, N313,N402, N422,
N505,N520).. Does that mean, our batch can stay as scattered as
possible, however the new occupants should b clustered
2gthr??????????? I dnt understand the logic in asking already stelled
peopl 2 shift 2 a new location!

Am glad that finally people are discussing this matter of grave importance and trying to find a solution, although their number is meager. So we need to bring in as many MTechs as possible to the meeting tonight. The two steps suggested by Chandrama are worth trying. Let us form two such groups in the meeting and get going ASAP.
