Details for Snowies Weekend 8th and 9th of March

Meeting Point and Time: Be at the Three Mile Dam Campground ready to leave in vehicles at 10am sharp. We will not be waiting for late comers, so be there earlier if you want to set up camp first.

Camping: We are camping on the western side of Three Mile Dam, which is the second and better signed access road on the right as you come from Kiandra and is about 1.5km past the road to Selwyn. Coming from Tumbarumba, it will be the first entrance on the left and before the Selwyn turnoff. You will need to provide your own camping gear lunches, dinner, breakfast and all other snacks whilst riding. There are pit toilets at the campground, but no showers or drinking water.

Weather: We will keep an eye on this closer to the time, but conditions can be extremely changeable in alpine areas, so pack plenty of warm weather gear.

Ride Options:

Saturday Harder Ride (Ride Leaders Angela and Rob B) - This will be a 72km loop ride from the Round Mountain Car Park in the remote, but spectacular Jagungal Wilderness Area. This ride has a number of steep climbs and steep descents, including a 500m climb over 3-4 km’s around the 58km mark. A good level of fitness is essential and there may be sections where you will need to hike your bike. You will need to be self sufficient with food and water, however there will be numerous creeks along the route to top up your water bottles. Expect to be out for 6-8 hours and all riders MUST carry thermals, a light weight waterproof jacket, a space blanket, a snake bandage, personal First Aid items, bike lights/headtorch and bike spares. We will ride along the Round Mountain Trail, past Derschkos Hut, before turning NE onto the Grey Mare Trail past O’Keefe and Mackeys Huts and then onto Happy Jacks road, back to Cabramurra Road and then back to the car park.

Saturday Easier Ride (Ride leader PJ) - This will be a 10km out and back ride (20km in total) from the Dargals Trail Head Car Park to the Tooma River. This is a very scenic ride through some well timbered areas, past Patons Hut, with no major hills, but will still get the heart rate up in sections. This should be comfortably done within 2 hours and there are options to extend the ride if the group wants to. Everyone on this ride should also be self sufficient and well equipped in case of bad weather. A stop off at Cabramurra on the way back to the campsite for a hot or cold beverage might be on the cards.

Sunday Ride (Ride leaders same as Saturday) – There will be a 50km loop option and a 20-30km shorter out and back or car shuffle option, still to be decided. Both rides start from the camp ground where we will ride east along the Link Road to Kiandra, cross the Snowy Mountains Highway, where we pick up the Nungar Trail to Witzes Hut and then up the Bullocks Hill Trail. Here we cross back over the Snowy Mountains Highway and pick up the Coppermine Trail, before hitting the Wallaces Creek Trail and it’s spectacular views along the ridgeline and then onto a fun descent back to the campground. Whilst this ride is not as remote, riders should still be self sufficient and well equipped. It will also involve some reasonable hills to climb in parts, but nothing too extreme.

It would be good to get an idea of numbers, so please reply here or to enq...@mtbwagga.asn.au if you are intending on joining us.
