Hi all,

I was curious if anyone knew where I could find the route colors for the bus lines? The information is available on the routes file for the subways it seems, but not in the bus file.

Many thanks,
Dan

I don't think there are colors for the bus routes, except for those on the map.  Are you referring to those?

Yes - would like to layer bus routes on a google map, but want the colors to remain the same as the borough bus map PDF's. Figured information about colors used on each route to make the PDF's is available somewhere, right??

Hi all,

Just thought I would post this on a Monday morning as opposed to Friday evening in hopes of an answer. Anyone know how to get the same colors used to draw the bus routes on the borough bus map PDF's?

Much appreciated,
Dan

Daniel,

Here are the colors of bus line in Manhattan: however, there doesn't seem to be a coherent scheme, as is evident from the different colors for Q32 in Manhattan and Queens. I found the RGB values using Photoshop's color picker; While the color selection on maps for Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens & Staten Island appear to be similar, there may be small differences: e.g. compare Q32 in Queens with M10 & M15 in Manhattan.

Routes: R, G, B;
M1, M5, M20, M42, M60, M98: 237, 28, 36;
M2, M3, M9, M31, M34, M103, M104: 154,  37, 143;
M4, M7, M8, M22, M23, M57, M100; 0, 174, 235;
M10, M15: 0,108,183;
M11, M21, M35, M66, M86, M101, M102, Q32*: 250, 166, 26;
M14, M16, M72, M106, M116: 114, 191, 68;

* On the Queens bus map. Q32 has the color 0, 108, 182

Daniel,

Bus routes are not assigned permanent, immutable colors the way that
subway routes are. (In addition to being represented as the lines on
the map, subway colors are embodied in the route symbols, and they
appear in other places as well for example service change notices and
in many cases the trains themselves.)

One might be able to find an example here or there, but bus route
colors are generally not used outside the maps. And as Robert noted,
they are not necessarily the same on one map as they might be on in an
adjacent borough's map. Within the same borough, they may change from
one map to the next over time.

That said, here are the color values that we use, in CMYK:

light blue - 80 cyan
red - 100 magenta, 100 yellow
orange - 40 magenta, 100 yellow
purple - 45 cyan, 100 magenta
dark blue - 100 cyan, 55 magenta
light green - 60 cyan, 100 yellow
dark green - 100 cyan, 100 yellow
