You’re invited to join the Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador (CISPES) for our annual Solidarity Cyclers Ride on Memorial Day weekend, May 23-25, 2015!
CISPES is a national, grassroots organization that works to promote social and economic justice in El Salvador and throughout Latin America. For over 35 years, we’ve been organizing to stop U.S. intervention and to accompany the Salvadoran popular movement in its struggle to build a true democracy.
Every year, we organize a three-day bike ride through the rolling hills and beautiful countryside of Maryland and Virginia to raise money for our grassroots campaigns.
What Kind of Work Gets Funded?
The 2015 ride will be raising money for CISPES’s work with front-line communities in El Salvador who are organizing to resist US-backed development projects that threaten the environment and workers’ rights.
Who Can Ride?
You don’t have to be a hardcore biker to rise to the challenge of the Solidarity Cyclers Ride! Many past participants have just been DC bike commuters prior to the big event. But it is a long ride so you should be pretty comfortable on your bike. With our training rides and bike-fix-it days to prepare, you can get ready in just a few months.
How Do I Fundraise?
It’s easier than you think! We’ll provide basic materials so you can ask your friends, family, and coworkers to sponsor you for each mile you ride. You’ll be surprised how generous (and impressed!) people will be when you tell them you’re riding 180 miles for a good cause. CISPES can also help you to organize parties and other events to raise money.
Where Do I Get More Info?
There will be an informational meeting about the Solidarity Cyclers Ride on April 1st at 6:30 pm (St. Stephens Church, 1525 Newton St. NW, Columbia Heights). https://www.facebook.com/events/441008646057132/
