Hi guys,

At GitHub, one of the things that we've been working on for the past year or
so is a Windows desktop client for Git, similar to GitHub for Mac
(http://mac.github.com) called GitHub for Windows. This application is
intended to get people started with Git and GitHub in a friendly way.

As part of this release, we will be shipping a custom version of MSysGit along
with the package, based on the current release; a lot of our tweaks are
specific to .NET and Java developers and probably wouldn't be wanted in the
official MSysGit release (things like a default gitignore that ignores VS
project settings files, etc).

However, as part of this, we will be making every change we make public, so
MSysGit is certainly free (and encouraged!) to copy any changes we make. Our
binary distribution of MSysGit can be found at:

https://github.com/github/windows-msysgit

There are no modifications to the MSysGit source itself, the binaries are
simply the output of portable-release.sh. If we do end up changing MSysGit
source, we will definitely be making those changes public as well.

While the folks on this list are most likely very comfortable with
command-line Git already, if anyone would like to be added to the Private Beta
which will be going out very shortly, please send a mail to pa...@github.com
and I'll get you set up.
