Brand new installation of git for windows 1.9.4 preview 20140611 (latest maintained version)... I'm just starting out with git, but so far it seems any functions that involve writing locally fail with this error message.  Example above (no idea how to paste it inline...).  Throws an error message dialogue with the message in the subject line immediately prior to the 'fatal...' lines appearing.

Tried google, stackoverflow, etc. but haven't turned up anything actionable - probably because it's a too-generic windows error message rather than anything specific to git.

My best guesses are it's something to do with either incorrectly registered dlls, and/or C++ library issue... but really I don't know, and I don't know how to investigate low-level issues of that nature anyway.

Unfortunately I seem to be thwarted before I've got started.  Not sure how to proceed.  Could someone point me in the right direction?  Are there log files somewhere?

I'm new to this, so apologies if I'm missing something obvious...

Thanks in advance,
P
