Hi All Dear Board members,
As you may see, we, the 2014-2016 school admin team, would like to ask for your approval or advise on our proposal of donating some Chinese books to Okemos lib.
There are two set of books of Chinese. This summer we received ~250 free books from China Qiaoban Through the Association of Chinese Schools of Michigan; we purchased some ~20 kids books previously through parents (most freely: parents did not refund).
These books are about Chinese history, culture, and language learning / teaching. Some are good for kids, some for teachers, some for adults, and some for language researchers.
However, it is really tough to have a software system, a team, and storage space in order to make them available to those who need.
When Okemos library was asking us to assist them purchasing Chinese books, we negotiated with them and they would like to manage these books with our help and make them available to the community including Chinese community.
The school admin team discussed and proposed the following – we believe this is the best way to take advantage of these books for both the School and the Chinese community:
1. We will select some books useful to teachers/teaching and keep them for internal usage (mostly by School admin and teachers) – we will work with teachers to decide which books to stay.
2. We will donate all others to the Okemos library. This means that they have the ownership and will manage them based on their policy, and our Chinese Community will follow their rules to check out and in books.
3. The books donated to and managed by Okemos library will be available to the majority of Chinese community in greater Lansing area, if not all, through CADL system
We sent out emails to collect any feedback from parents since last week. So far we did not hear anything.
So we would like to hear more (comments/advises/concerns) from you. If no objection, we would like to start to implement this plan asap. Let’s put Dec 1 as deadline.
Thanks,
Guangming
Thank you all members! I did not see any issues from our side (board or parents) so far: there are actually one or two other Chinese school in MI that are doing the same things – asking their local libraries to manage these books, and so potentially we can borrow these books too.
So we will start to implement: negotiating with the library – hopefully they will take this Officially.
BTW, I was originally planning to have a meeting with the board: seems that we could not do it this semester. I will try to do that during my last semester (the coming Spring). For that meeting, we can discuss financial/transition/…
However, any concerns/suggestions are welcome any time.
Thanks,
Guangming

Hi Guangming,
I agree to donate the books to Okemos Library. Managing the books has been an issue in the past and the idea of using Okemos Library was talked before. I’m very glad to know that the library has agreed to take them in. I recall space was their concern before.
If other board members do not voice different opinions, please proceed to the donation.
Thank you!
Xia Qing
