Hello All,
As many of you know, the Mount Sinai Sailing Association conducts
racing in the waters just off Mt Sinai Harbor. Our racing program is
a great way for members to get out on the water and learn the art
and science of yacht racing. Because our boats vary in size and
performance, the racing is Handicapped in an attempt to level the
playing field. While imperfect, the Performance Handicap Racing
Fleet (PHRF) regulations allow for adjustments based on equipment
that may affect performance. Each year, the Yacht Racing Association
of Long Island Sound (YRALIS) issues updated PHRF Regulations. As
club scorers and handicappers we review these regulations for
changes that may affect your rating and thereby leveling the playing
field (theoretically). This year, there was one change which stood
out and might affect several of our members.
"Cruising Headsail Credit"
The 2022 YRALIS Regulations provide a credit for anyone using an
non-laminated, woven polyester/dacron cruising headsail designed to
be roller reefed, and is stored on an above deck roller furling
system. The sail must be the one the owner commonly uses on both
races and cruises.
If you think you may qualify for this credit, or if there are any
other equipment changes on your boat that may require a PHRF rating
adjustment, contact:

Also, in order to facilitate club racing, the MSSA Handicap
Committee will provide a PHRF rating to any member that wishes to
participate in a club event. If you think you would like to race
your boat, you may contact us to begin the handicapping process.
