Hello,

I just sent in my mooring application to the Town of Brookhaven.

Just the thing to do when it's 20 degrees outside!

Thanks for the heads up Barry. Also  note that you have to upload your Boating Safety Certificate.

That makes me wonder what Town has to do with boating certification. I can own the boat but not necessarily operate the boat? If anything I would think boat insurance would be more important for them even though it is not required when owning a boat. Just thinking out loud…

That is interesting, my dad paid for his dock and required no proof of boaters safety course. Ive yet to pay for my mooring but will when I renew the club moorings.

Thank You,

That is very interesting regarding needing the safety certificate to renew a mooring permit. And also did not need it for town dock slip. Thanks for the info!

I got it done online but spoke to someone at the office, if you are going to the office to get it done, you have to bring the following: Boat Registration or Documentation,  Boating Safety Certification or your Driver License with the anchor icon.
All the best

Lots of fun if you don't have a boat but want to keep your mooring location.  I had to provide my bill of sale for the new boat since it wasn't registered (not built yet).  Even though I sent it in and attached y certificate, I still got a call from someone else in the office that wanted my registration.  I think (hope) it's all straightened out now.

FYI, I did ask Town question why would they ask for boating certificate. The answer I received is” it is required by Coast Guard “. Makes no sense whatsoever. Sounds like someone at the Town is being proactive?

That is incorrect. The boating cert is NYS requirement. Not a Federal Requirement.

Im curious if they are not allowing registration without it, at all. There are a few small sailboats over where my mooring is that do not have engines. The NYS boater safety course is only required for motorized boats.

Thank You,

I called the town parks department and they are claiming it is coming from the coast guard and NYS to require it for any vessel registering for a mooring. Even unmotorized vessels.

I guess this is the end of the phasing in of Brianna's Law?
Does this have to do with the people born after '93 or '88 or '78?
I was able to get my mooring permit OK.

How long does it take ( or am I doing something wrong) until I will see the option for the dinghy dock permit purchase?

Joe

Joe,
Don’t waste your time on dinghy or parking permits, it is not available yet. I found that out hard way. As for age, I was born way before 78 and they asked for certificate anyway. This requirement makes no sense but when we talk about it at least feels like boating season is around the corner :)

So after calling Brookhaven town and not getting a clear answer, I called my uncle. He's retired Coast Guard and also coordinates all of the training for all of the harbor Masters across Long Island. He was head of marine police for East Hampton town. He personally spoke to the Brookhaven Town Harbor master Charlie, who told him there is a new code in Brookhaven town requiring, any power boat or sailboat with auxiliary power that is on a mooring to provide a boater safety certificate upon registration. This is a new code, only Brookhaven town has this. It only applies to vessels on moorings, and any vessel underway under auxiliary power, as the original intentions of the safety course.

If you are a member who has a sailboat on a mooring and do not have an outboard engine or an inboard engine and only moves under sail power you can state that upon registering for your mooring and you're not required to have the boaters safety course. I'm aware of a few boats over near me in the mooring field that only have sail with no engine. I'm not sure if they're members but it's good information to pass along.

I'm going to add this to the Facebook group too so anyone that does not get the emails, but see his Facebook is aware.

I did the online route last night, and took a pic of my Reggie and license with anchor and attached as instructed. Today I got an email that said there was a problem with both. I called and they said it all looked fine, disregard the email.

Growing pains I guess.

If you are operating a boat, Power or Sail it should be mandatory that you obtain a Boaters Safety Certificate. Too many times we read about boating accidents in the newspaper. I am glad to see Brookhaven town is being proactive and promoting Safe boating.
