Fuel polishing is a method of cleaning suspended algae and other contaminants from diesel fuel. The fuel is continuously pumped from the tank, through a filtration system and returned to the tank.  It would be done after the fuel is treated with an algaecide.

I learned something new. Did not know there is a name for it. I my line of work we refer to this as fuel system flush. Thanks for explaining. Hope I don’t need this service but someone in Mt Sinai actually does it? Would that be Ralph’s?

I bought a boat once that had been sitting for a year or two. I motored a couple miles and the engine died. I got the fuel polished later that day, and that solved the problem, Polishing also should remove any water in the tank from condensation over time.

This whole conversation left me scratching my head. If I had full tank of contaminated fuel, that would be around $150. Why not just pump out old fuel and fill the tank with fresh one and replace fuel filter? Total cost would be roughly $340 with current high fuel pricing. Marina charges between $150 to $200 per hour if boat is at their place. To connect pumping equipment and clean fuel it would be easily 3 hours plus cost of high capacity filter they would use. Thats easily over $600. So, why polish fuel ?  What are the benefits? Am I missing something here? To original poster, how much fuel are we talking about?

It's not actually the fuel that's the problem.  If it was I would agree with your suggestion to empty the tank and put fresh treated fuel in.  The tank has algae on the bottom which causes the filter to clog.  So the tank has to be scrubbed which is usually done with the fuel, which is then polished/cleaned.
