John, I strongly do NOT recommend this approach. Find another way to do this.

Subject Stepping the mast on a 19 ft. O'Day sailboat

Hi Jim:
My son has a 19 ft O'Day.  The mast goes thought the cabin top and sits on the keel.  The only way to step it is to use a hoist.  The mast is very unwheely because of it's length.  He is thinking of cutting the mast 6 in. above the the cabin op and installing a hinge.  He could then use the jib halyard to pivot the mast up.

would you pass this on to the MSSA group and anyone else that you may know who may have had the same problem..
Your help and expertise is appreciated.
Thanks;

John

Etchells 22’s and j 24’s commonly use gin poles for raising keel stepped rigs. Very simple to set up and plenty of expertise can be found online.

Is this even a trailer able model?  Daggerboard or swing keel?  Keel stepped?  Seems like they thought two or so people could just lift it up and slide it down with NO hoist?

I would NOT chop the mast and put in a hinge.  The rigging might be too lightly designed to take 100% of the load.

I had a pin hinge tabernacle mast base on my 1976 Venture of Newport 23 for about 5 years.     http://www.l-y-n-c-h.com/Sailboat/content/LS_on_Del_AUG_2003_large.html  This was a trailer able 400 lb swing keel cabin top cutter rigged boat.     I only put myself in the hospital once while bringing DOWN the mast and got a slip the next week on the Delaware river.

EVERY TIME I had to launch – WHAT A PAIN IN THE ASS!!!!!    I had a “gin pole” lever, and bracket, and blocks etc etc.  1 to 2 hours by the time it was tuned and secured.

I predict you will do all these modifications and set this thing once or twice and give up.   Instead of paying $75 to the town for a ramp, get a mooring for $175, dingy rack for $25 and kayak out there.  (okay a few hundie for the mooring kit and setting it.)

When I was in my early 20s, I had a Lightning (19 ft).  I raced it and I took it to regattas.  When I got it the mast was wood, rather heavy and went through the deck.  Still with my two crew we could raise and lower it in 15 to 20 minutes.  I had it for 10 years.  It should be no problem.

If needed I could come and coach.

The problem here is that the cabin top is not designed to withstand the vertical loading from the mast. The load on this boat is carried at the keel. You would probably crush the cabin top.

Sounds like you need a hoist or a bunch of guys.

Good luck,

Get an 4"x4"x10' and a few ropes. Could even use a sunfish mast if you have one. Itsd simple and could get the job done. On the J-70 it is deck steped, 25' carbon mast. It is hinged and pivots up, I have stepped it on my own, two extra people is nice, but I cant imagine a hinge will end well. Two buddies, a 18 pack of budlight, a few ropes, and and 10' piece of wood, and that mast can be up in 15 minutes.

This is a J-24 video

If anyone knows anyone who wants a 22' MacGregor Venture with swing keel and deck-stepped mast, let me know.  I will give it away for free.  It is in need of a lot of love but is complete without outboard motor.  It's in the water in Sayville and needs to go.  Maybe it could be salvaged for parts.  I don't want to take it to the dump.

EXACTLY, no compression post!!!! The rigging and chaninplates would also be beefier to support the whole mast and a bit more lateral load!!!

Now THAT is interesting.

Not sure what would be more fun….doing that ON the trailor??   OR trying it in the water with my swing keel NOT down <smile>

Regarding the 22 McGregor if that goes for parts I’d be interested in using the mast for Gin pole!

I offer any person the whole boat to take for any purpose.  The whole boat needs to go.  The mast, rudder and tiller, swing keel and hull is in good condition.  Sails are old but still sail.  Needs a good scrubbing.  No leaks.  In water in Sayville.

FYI

Stuart Marine still makes the Mariner and the Rhodes 19 and all the parts are still available.
