Hello Missoula Linux Users Group,

I was just reminded that we have a group!  Nobody's posted or updated in two years.  Should we all leave, or is there still interest?

Howdy!

I'm not aware of any current group activity, but there is a small handful of folks who have expressed interest in rekindling the group.

I'd like to be more involved in a local linux community as well.

I no longer live in Msla, but have used Linux, almost exclusively for about 15 years...and have a few converts to my credit out here in Alberton...in-person meetings would be difficult, but I do thing a local user group could be useful...I recently got my Ham Radio license, and intend to use Linux to explore software defined radio (SDR), and electronics...supposed to be retired, but a fella needs to have something to do...

I certainly forgot about it. Time goes by but it must have been 10 years
or so since I went to a meeting. I'm typing this on an OpenSUSE box though.

Yeah, I've got an RTL-SDR dongle sitting here I have to get back to. I
got interested in the ADS-B system but then work intruded.

Sounds like a great topic for an MLUG meeting.

I have a ton of questions for you both about packet radio :)

It would be amazing to be a part of that network.

Count me in.  Renewed interest in amateur radio (N5CY) and continued
interest in Linux.  Haven't used anything else since 2000.  Live in
Missoula.  Attended some meetings a few years ago. Remember Heather.

Hello Msla-lug,

Does anyone want to propose a time and location for a meeting?  I'm usually available after 5:30 p.m. and also live in Missoula.  I was living in Polson when I joined the group.  :)

I use Linux daily and test software on medical devices that run Linux.

Aefter 5:30 weekdays and generally anytime weekends, works for me!   The Missoula Public Library has a couple meeting rooms.  I'll stop by this weekend, check their availability, and throw out a few dates/times.  If anyone has alternate location options or scheduling preferences, please share them!

Hey George,

I don't think anyone has been interested in meeting because of the Global Pandemic!  If you guys are really itchin' to talk about LInux, maybe we should have an online meetup.  Thomas

At 71, and retired, I doubt I'd have much to contribute anymore...still use Linux (Ubuntu), maintain our home network, and a small system for my wife's medical/counseling office...do plan to do a little audio/video/music, recording/archiving...ham radio was on my bucket list for at least 40 years, and I finally got my license...from that perspective I'm hoping use Linux, as a part of emergency communication, Software Defined Radio (SDR), and electronics...not sure if anyone else has interests along those lines...we have a small farm in Alberton, so time is somewhat limited...

Don't sell yourself short. :) Whole point of this group was to give
as can get as can. No matter if you're just sitting and soaking it

I miss it.  I hope to attend the zoom meeting as well as in-person meetings.

I've got a RTL-SDR dongle but so far I've been using it on a Windows
laptop for ADS-B. I should try to move it to Linux but the distro on my
desktop is openSUSE 13.2 which was EOL in 2017. I don't know if I can
build gqrx from source.

One of these days I'll upgrade but I'm lazy and 13.2 works for what I
do. If it ain't broke...

RTL-SDR repurposes a digital TV tuner chip. There are some limitations
towards the HF end of the spectrum but it has a wide range. I've mostly
pulled in ADS-B position reports from the airport to see who is coming
and going but you can pickup broadcast FM etc.

https://www.rtl-sdr.com/

will give you some ideas. I've been using Windows which is pretty smooth
while getting it up on Linux can be tricky. DragonOS sounds
interesting. I may try if from a live USB.

I actually have a LimeSDR PCIe card but since moving back to MT it hasn’t been set back up yet due to space constraints (my hole office is also the only place I can store my lab gear and such so it’s… a mess). I had most of the software bits for a wideband multi-channel scanner before I packed it up and moved back from Seattle. The cool part about the limesdr is it has onboard FPGA abs processing for doing all the stuff like looking at a big chunk of spectrum, ID potential signals, and try to tune  them.

Basically you can automate looking at a waterfall and picking out signals from it.

I don’t have any of that code handy because I didn’t really have infrastructure off my own setup then to host git repository. If I ever get space built and get back into it though I’m planning on reimplementing it. I’m not sure how many simultaneous frequencies I can make it tune (and outside the FM band there’s not much opportunity to test here lol).

My wishlist is making it work with FM, AM, and digital  - P25, NXDN, DMR, dPMR, POCSAG. Since the RF chip can provide up to 80MHz chunks unlike a normal scanner which tubes a single RF with 6.25khz or ~12khz around it that part is all software/fpga. I had it sort of working with two FM channels in a static 40MHz.

P25 is probably pie in the sky. It’s license encumbered. And for all the digital modes I’m not sure how much of the decode is reasonable to do on-board vs sending the bitstream onto the host for decode. The host would probably have to be responsible for all the voice codecs but the board would do all the bit recovery (ie getting the bits from the NXDN 4-FSK but leaving it up to the host to figure out what those bits contain) — POCSAG is a lot simpler and could probably be entirely some in the board and just a stream of decoded pages sent on.

All just thoughts though lol - I had a hard time getting FM to work!
