Hey,

Does anyone have any experience setting up asterisk? And is something I can setup with a google voice number and essentially setup a free home phone solution?

Thanks,
Nick

Yes and no, in that order, unless GV has started offering SIP trunking. But last I checked, GV was a proprietary VoIP solution like Skype.

I've built a bunch of Asterisk based PBXen.  The only one locally that I can mention at the moment is the one at Modwest.  In 1.8 (which was just officially released) they added SIP/IPv6 and Google Voice/Talk support (among other stuff).  I haven't played with the Google stuff at all yet though.  I do not know Google's stance on the Google Voice/Talk channel adapters in Asterisk.  I don't even know the history of it honestly.  However Google probably won't slam the door intentionally but they may change their protocol/behaviors at any time which may require upgrades.

Oh and Asterisk 1.8 is designated "LTS" and they plan on supporting it for 4 years.  Not that I've had huge issues in upgrades between versions, but the dialplan language has evolved over the years.  The old "zap/zapata/zaptel" stuff has been renamed DAHDI, small stuff.
