I am rummaging out the status and popularity of Linux usage on MSIT
realms. Till now couldn't connect with any senior.. So, making this
short; I would like to ask who all are familiar with any Linux
distribution. When I say 'all', I expect you to ask your other
classmates you are in contact with. If got good response, will like to
organise one LUG MSIT (Linux Users Group) with Linux users to guide
others about the importance and necessity of the same.

this.

i am familiar with beginner level linux commands (ubuntu
distribution).been practicing this hols on that (it can be dual booted
alongside xp.works smoothly even on dual core 1.8 with 2GB RAM). next
stop would be shell scripting for me.
and YES ankur you are right.college interns are treated with some
respect if they know linux. besides its the most popular, efficient
and well designed open source OS (windows suck at programming design
in front of it!).

>>to know what linux is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux

>>to know what a linux distribution is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_distribution

>>to see the popularity comparison between various linux distributions:
http://linuxtrends.com/linux-distribution-popularity-trends/

>> to know what open source software means: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open-source_software

i actually want to know whether any one amongst us has worked on more
than one linux distribution (ankur you?).because i had simply been
guided too ubuntu as the best one (even the stats show that). BUT I
MAY BE WRONG.
so how about having a discussion on what's the best distro in the
market.

and also people i have read and researched enough to get convinced of
the fact that IF you want to be a good programmer you need to ditch
windows and switch over to linux.windows are made by a bunch of MS
guys and which is why their creativity, their logic thinking,
debugging, testing....... is limited to that bunch only. in this world
nobody's perfect at computers so windows fails for a programmer.

linux on the other hand has been made, modified and maintained by
hundreds of thousands of programmers since it is open source. the code
perfection can be seen by the fact that windows 7 has millions of code
lines more than any linux distro.MS guys might be smart but not
smarter than thousands of other programmers put together.and you know
maybe the best programmers aren't working with MS at all. they are all
into open source projects because they know its value.

comparison b/w LINUX and WINDOWS: http://www.michaelhorowitz.com/Linux.vs.Windows.html

SO guys if anyone here knows linux (even a tiny bit) raise your hand
and if you don't and want to know we'll start a thread here on
downloading various distros, tuts and books.

Yeah, I have worked upon OpenSuse longer than I worked on Ubuntu. And
no distro can be labelled as 'best'; It varies from user to user in
FOSS. Ubuntu is most popular, yes but as I said, opinion varies. I
like OpenSuse more than I do Ubuntu.

Yes, you are right when you said that interns are treated highly if
they are comfortable with Linux. As matter of fact, it's the Linux
which is majorily used outside. See any resume of one worthy engineer
and it will be filled up with this.

So, finally, the Linux is absolutely necessary. But again I have no
idea if their exists any such group in MSIT. Probably there isn't any.
There is one 'Technocratz' group but I'm skeptical about'em.

And IMO, it is always wrong to disregard Microsoft completely. We
taper about'em, but again we use them anyway.

Hey ankur and Acp,

Though I'm not really familiar with linux as of now, but I just wanted
to add that MS-Dos, Microsoft's first commercial OS, was NOT built by
Bill gates n his pals! When they had launched it in a meeting with
IBM, DOS didn't even exist! Lol... Bill got it made by a local
computer software shop, it wasn't his at all! That's the reason why
apple n MS are the biggest rivals coz MS is a pure thief I tell u!
Steve jobs is the real guy, creative genius! :D

i have found out a bit about 'technocratz'. they may be good but are
egoistic and aristocratic in nature.kind of exclusive club they've
created for themselves and don't think much of fachchas. plus we as
freshers will gel together much better than with them.teaming up with
them means very little collaboration actually because of different
free times in college, clash between study routines and other mess...
already we are following a school like routine in college, I&P lab
closes by 4:30 or so and we can't virtually work in college after our
shift gets over unless we have special permission. other options left
are to form an official group (it will be hard, just for Linux i mean)
recognised by college or to meet online in a conference. or may be
find out some hangout nearby college where we can meet. look
personally i am not much of a society running kind of guy so lets
spread word about LUG in our college (like put up posters, paste it on
bulletin boards) and let people come themselves if interested.

and regarding MS boss, i am not disregarding them completely but when
you are looking for the best linux is far ahead of them and again
because it is FOSS. why? because you can never have all the good ideas
brimming up in one company itself. sure some of their products are
great but people who told us 'WINDOWS is the best OS' were giving us
an eyewash.

Good idea! If Technocratz is actually the way you have found out,
then it's better we will form one group. Let's not it to be LUG, as
you said creating LUG seperately may take lot of time, provided there
are very less linux enthusiasts here.. And I'm not great in Linux
either... still a learner. So, we all can collaborate and make one
Tech group. It can be branched and LUG can be a part of it; others can
be Computer-Networking (which I adore), mobile technology (I seriously
swear top in my mind when I see guys with Samsung corby), Applications
group, tech-electronics group and you guys please suggest more.
The only thing required now is to team-up (taking Arjit as
granted :D ). Spreading a word is necessary and that's the skill Arjit
imbibes :). I'm not socializing-guy either. I can type, but I can't
speak except in tech-related matters.
It will be more better if all first years (all branches) are connected
on web (which is practically difficult in college)[but let this group
limited to CSE)

@ Ankur

i have been thinking that it will be better if we expand this group to
include CSE( 2nd shift) and also the IT guys (IT 1st shift&2nd). i saw
the course content for the IT guys and it does not differ much from
CSE (only a few courses are diff.).

basically what we are studying is computers in and out whether it be
under the banner of CSE or IT. and having like interests we together
can be a 300 member strong group.it will also help us to interact with
the other guys because in college we hardly get to talk with guys from
IT or the 2nd shift people.i've got a few contacts in IT (both shifts)
and i think i will ask them to tell their class crowd about this
group. we need to change the name of the group, add some more owners
and managers,.......... stuff like that.

i had already printed a few sheets where our class guys could fill up
their name, roll and email so that we could send them requests.looks
like we can do the same thing for IT as well. we need to ask every one
to give their intro in a separate thread, tell what their skills and
interests(present and future) in computers are. and whenever the need
to form a group for a project or a competition arises, they can just
simply scan the thread to get members which they want. this will help
everyone. the only thing we need to do now is promote our group and
get the members first.

A nice suggestion there, Pradyumn. We must definitely expand this
group to include everyone from IT and rest of the CSE batches as well.
It will be much helpful for tech fests as well...

@Ankur- Well yea, you can surely take me for granted to be a part of
this initiative. Btw, 'spreading the word' isn't a skill! Lol...
Everyone can do it :p

hey Arjit and Pradyumn..

I think both of you are aware from the fact that i am still
maintaining that site.
see here's a suggestion, since our group is not having easy-to-
remember URL and
a limited space so i have given a link for this group in that
site(which will ofcourse be easily accessible ).
we'll definately share our discussions and posts in this group but for
polls and announcements,
we should refer to that site.
I admit that posting is somewhat difficult in that site but you see
we'll make it just for
appearance that means all the members of our batch will be in contact
through groups but will share
both the platforms (group and the site),after all the site is also
having a space of 100 MB which
will help us to share more contents(remember together we'll have 200
MB space).
The same thing applies if you want to add IT guys and make a NETWORK
300
(you can't achieve this with a space like 100 MB).

So it depends upon you now, whether you wanna keep that site or you
wanna discard this idea.
As far as my opinion we should proceed with both..the group an the
site.
Soon i am going to add links of those URL's which are posted by ACP in
discussions.

the URL of that site is.."https://sites.google.com/site/2010msitcse/"

send me your feedbacks..
contact me either on fb
or here's my email.."nali...@gmail.com"

Its certainly fine by me, though I don't really think a group has any
limitations... As far as the url is concerned, I had originally kept
it as simple as 'msitcse', which has now been changed :).. We can make
it 'msit2010', I'm quite sure it'd be available...

Anyways, We can use both, no problems :)

@arjit

ya its totally fine...
but some of my friends were finding it difficult to access this
group...
secondly, there's no harm in keeping the space of 200 MB.
Thats why i suggested this idea..
but you see..we can add even audio-visual contents in that site
that you certainly will not allow in this group coz of space
limitation.
but i make you sure that none of the platform(group or site)will over-
shadow
each other.

rest is upon the mutual decision of you and ACP.

Also, if anyone is not familiar with installing process of Ubuntu,
then please don't - don't try it yourself arbitrarily. Check out the
installation types and methods mentioned on web or feel free to fire
it here. Have a backup of your data first (though if perfectly
installed, you will never need it). Boot Record, once messed may give
you more problems than it solve.

To all those who are gonna install Ubuntu on their machines and are
unfamiliar with it >
The simplest, easiest and recommended method to install it by- Wubi.
Your Windows OS will remain intact.
Follow this link: http://www.liberiangeek.net/2010/03/how-to-install-ubuntu-10-04-lucid-lynx-with-wubi/
and you are done.
O'wise there are some minute chances in which GRUB can replace over
MBR without identifying Windows OS installed in your machine leaving
you totaled with unstructured partitioning and boot records.

So, go with Wubi.. and you have [u]not a single reason to worry about[/
u]. Install Ubuntu like yet another setup.
Enjoy!!

PLEASE NOTE:

Already one case. Aahaa! Either last post of Wubi should've come
beforehand or he must have installed it after reading that.
Guys!! Install it just like any other setup.. it's just easy as that.
In beginning you can assign about 10-20 GBs for it. Moreover, you can
always access your Windows partitions via root in linux, so storage
isn't a problem.
And to all those who have crashed their partition setup, you can meet
one of us in college or ask here directly.. It should be resolved.

And the initial problem was never my fault.
The SETUP crashed mid-way, I did not mess up my boot sector.
Anyway if it does happen with someone, no need to panic; a fix is
possible(without re-installing windows).
