to all, help
Dear All,

We are in the process of streamlining various IT Services for operational and security reasons. As part of it, we are fine tuning mailing lists. It has been decided to remove 'a...@lists.iiit.ac.in' because senders do not explicitly know the recipient groups, and hence end up sending to even those who are not intended recipients. With this, if you intend to send something to everyone, you will need to send it to individual mailing lists such as students@lists..., faculty@..., staff@..., etc

Details of various mailing lists are available at http://intranet.iiit.ac.in/maillist.html

Moderation policy for broadcast mails to various mailing lists is as follows:

1. Student to Student
Broadcast mails from a student to 'students' will get moderated by student moderator group appointed by student parliament. Student parliament can recommend members (say five) who would do the moderation. Institute Sysadmins will be out of the loop.

The mails which have large attachments (say more than 200KB) will be rejected and the sender will be asked to upload the attachment on a site and only include URL in the email. This is necessary to protect servers from getting choked and to protect student mailbox from exhausting quota due to large emails. Other than this, all other moderation policies depend upon student moderators.

2. Staff / Faculty to Student
Mails from staff/faculty will not be subjected to any moderation. All staff and faculty (including gmail IDs of faculty) would be added to automatic approval list.

3. Student to Staff/Faculty
e-mails sent by students to staff/faculty will not be moderated by any moderator. If it is found that student has sent inappropriate/unnecessary email to staff/faculty list, then staff/faculty members are expected to reply to student(s) educating them about it.

In summary, Sysadmin Team (Server Room) will not moderate e-mails henceforth. Moderation of broadcast mails is left to the community. Expectation is that users will behave responsibly.

Note:We will discontinue mailing list  "a...@lists.iiit.ac.in" from  Thursday i.e. Dt.28-5-2015.

Regards
JP
